Cant wait to read Dicks origin for the new 52.
The preview is great. It seemed to me that they've borrowed some cues from the 'Robin's Recknoning' episode of the TAS...with Dick being taken in by Bruce Wayne for his own protection from Zucco (albeit, here he is placed in a Wayne Care Center and not the Wayne Manor itself), as well as his setting out to find Zucco on his own. To my mind, it always made sense that Dick would be the one to take the initiative of going out into the field and tackling criminals on his own, and that Bruce pretty much realizes that he's going to be out there anyway so he might as well be trained. That way, its Dick's decision 100% to become a vigilante...without any direct influence from Batman.
Also liked the bit about the bracelet with 'robins'. The idea that 'Robin' was a nickname given to Dick by his parents has always appealed to me so I'm glad its been cemented in the new 52 continuity.
They seem to have slipped in something from Sherlock, too...

I kinda feel like they already told the Zucco story. I'm more concerned about the transition to Nightwing without the Teen Titans around. Right now his character is the biggest loner in the DCU. That is a big down-grade from the "best leader". They are going to need something big to make Dick relevant again.
There ain't no teens watching Teen Titans Go.
Ditto. This is my same concern. I have no doubts that the preview is only showing an early recap of Dick's origin and the rest of the issue will focus on Nightwing, but then comes the dodgy question on how they work the timeline AND the inspiration for the name/costume change.
One of the great things about Dick's dynamic with Bruce, is that he was equally inspired by Superman, and it was comical the moments when it chafed Bruce's jealousy/early xenophobia. Now that's gone.![]()
I believe they have already said that the 0 issues will only focus on how he became Robin and won't get into how he became Nightwing, which is a little funny given the name of the title.
Anyway, the issue looks good.
Looks good. Glad to see Barrows back.
Did they really need to have a fight with Dick before they died? Also, i thought the Graysons' colours were the colours Robin wore. He's supposed to be paying tribute to them, to be carrying on the performance. With this DC is clearly pushing him towards Nightwing more. "Yeah he was Robin once, but dont trouble yourself too much with it, he's NW now, that's all you need to know. And Tim was always RR. See? Easy peazy."
Jesus Christ DC people arent morons.
Yeah, i'm not keen on that new angle at all, i mentioned in the Batman #0 thread because he was wearing the same costume in that last week. I really loved that the Flying Graysons suit was what inspired Robin's, it seems like such a pointless thing to change other than to illustrate that Nightwing's more important than Robin now. Hmmf.
That, said, i must say this looks like a good issue and i might pick it up.
Nice art, I'll be getting this.

I once wrote a long post about the declining importance of the 'Robin' concept in the Batman mythos across all media...and it seems that the new 52 confirms that trend. Dick IS Nightwing now...Robin is just part of his backstory. Being the Robin who was killed by the Joker is now just a part of Jason Todd's origin as the Red Hood. Tim was now never even Robin! And the only character with a claim to the name 'Robin' right now is more famous for being Bruce Wayne's son and the centerpiece of a global conflict between his parents...than he is for being the archetypal sidekick 'Robin, the Boy Wonder'!
Well if you think about it a year from the images shown he is going to be Nightwing and not Robin anymore. That's really weird to think about. Although that being said, none of the Nightwing costumes of his we have seen so far look anything like his Flying Graysons costume here, color wise anyway.
Though I guess they could of had his dad wear Nightwing colors and his mom Robin colors if they want to pay tribute to both of them at the same time.
