Well, in this case it's just the end of year in which some civilizations calender runs out, but if we're talking about an apocalypse, then yeah, the state of the world would depend on the apocalypse in question.
Most apocalypses just end with the termination of all or most human life, it's just that once humans are gone, it's pretty much the end of the world from their perspective.
Then you have the handful of really nasty ones like the planet exploding.

And then there's the REALLY nasty "end of Days" stories, like the Revelations of St. John, where Jod pretty much descides this whole "Universe" thing has run it's course and just unmakes everything we know and call existance. But not until after killing just about everybody first.
