Am I right in remembering that the Cartoon version of Gary Oak, as a ten year old, drove a red convertible everywhere with a six member cheerleading squad in the back, right from the moment he started as a trainer?
A Flock of Sheep.
A Pack of Wolves.
An Inconvenience of Heroes.
Yeah, pretty much. He ditched the car after the first few cities. IIRC the girls didn't last too long either.

I can't recall any signs that he actually lost them. Been a while though.
He also collected ten badges in a region where there were only seven gyms. (The Cinnabar one was closed in the anime.)

Well, It's more like they just quit showing up after a while. IIRC the early episodes had a big theme about how Gary Oak was better than Ash at the whol Pokemon Trainer thing. Then there were a bunch of episodes with Team Rocket, and only much later did Gary come back, having traded in his car for skateboarding behind his Arcanine with no cheerleaders in sight.
I don't remember if they came back for the obligitory hot-springs episode at Cinnabar.

Wherefore should one look if one were interested in reading/watching about demons, and demon protagonists?
Disgaea?

That's the second "dimension of awesome" picture I've seen you post.
The real kicker is only the Pewter and Cerulean City badges are recognizable as Kanto badges. I can only assume he so utterly dominated the other eight that they closed down and were replaced by the eight that Ash ended up getting (and he still got those other two badges).
I've made three of them, actually. Here are the previous two:

Sound's, omegalith's, and my avatar kinda look similar if you just glance past them while scrolling. Confusing.
Well, Cinnabar's was already closed and we know Giovanni humiliated Gary by calling out Mewtwo.
That sounds possible for the others though. It would explain why so many of the "leaders" only had one or two pokemon that were so weak compared to the random pokemon that Giovanni had lying in his pockets that he randomly threw at Jesse and James while leaving to go check on Mewtwo.
The most telling thing about Gary's superiority is that he presumably, y'know, earned those badges. Unlike Ash who got most of his badges because the Gym Leaders either took pity on him or were weakened by outside circumstances. Or were not even the actual Gym Leader.

Don't suppose you have artist references for them?
Rematches, especially ones where he only fought like one pokemon.
And yeah, the Earth Gym one where he fought tough pokemon sure, but without good trainers (because Ash's pokemon *are* pretty hardcore, he's just kind of a schmuck of a trainer).
Sabrina is always the most grievous one because he didn't even defeat her, he just befriended her via Haunter (and he didn't even legitimately catch Haunter either).
