It occurs to me a race of civilized Giants would have a lot of people completely unsuited to combat...

A twenty five foot artist/chef/bureaucrat/whatever with largely pacifistic ideals who never got much exercise before getting dragged along with a bunch of people shorter than his/her kneecaps on some crazy quest might be a pretty interesting character.

Well, if we're talking about human enemies, it's not going to be that hard for the out of shape giants to take them on in melee. Size matters a lot.

Plus, humans aren't exactly all that suited for combat against much larger creatures either.

Yeah, which makes the Giant a valuable team member, with any other non-combat benefits that come with size... And a chance to steadily upgrade as the series goes on and he/she starts taking combat more seriously.

Plus, if it's a show where characters develop superhuman strength and agility from being expert warriors then the Giant isn't necessarily overpowered just from the natural advantages.
