Goodbye Charles. You had become irrelevant in the book with your namesake.

    You will not be missed.

I'm really curious as to how Marvel actually expects people to buy that Cyclops is somehow the villain in all of this.
Yes, I hate everything [REDACTED BY ORDER OF CBR] has written.

But according to writer Brian Michael Bendis, Xavier had become an anachronism, as most of his former students are now too old to require a mentor. “He was this thing that was just floating around the X-books, with not the same amount of gravitas that he once had,” he said. “I did point out that he would matter more in death.”

Which is why he should have died at the end of Messiah Complex.

The fact that he's "died" so many times, and was allowed by Fraction and the editors to become an irrelevant "thing that was just floating around the X-books" as Bendis put it, makes this death less effective.

They missed their chance. At this point, I would have preferred that Xavier come back to the X-Men full force and lead them after AvX.

I am old enough to remember when Charles died the first time. I think he had to go before the original X-men came from the past.

Because Wolverine is right behind Spider-Man as the franchise for the company. We can't have Cyclops as the greatest X-Men leader - that would go against our plans!!!! Didn't you read the manifesto? First lets make Jean the love of Logan's life, not Scott's. Then we bring in Emma to solidify that. Now we have schism and the Jean Grey Institute. Top it off with this utter garbage and there you have it!!!!

And that's the exact same thing they did with the original Nightcrawler. Did his death matter? Within the story, not really. He was used to temporarily forward the character progression of the Wolverine cash-cow. In another sense, it did. It left readers with cloned billy-bad-arse male characters and brainless pin-up female characters -- only the costumes and powers vary. Say goodbye to diversity Marvel fans. If a character doesn't fit the editorial propaganda, he or she will be used as a plot gimmick to boost sales.

Cyclops is a villain the moment he struck first in AvX, the result of his slide into being a radical mutant hero. The Phoenix only exacerbated that slide.
