Wow. What a shock. Another desperate stunt to "prove" how "hip" they are. The Astonishing X-Men issue with the marriage sold 82k. You know how much the latest sold? FIFTY THOUSAND less. It's getting so old, these hyped up gimmicks. Willow's been gay for HOW LONG? Kennedy? Why do they keep screaming look at me and then wondering why people are looking. This just smacks of a cheap stunt. This whole season has been one example after another of Lady Gaga storytelling--let's see how much NONtroversy I can raise and make it have no real ramification on the story. Buffy's pregnant! She's getting an abortion! Quick, everyone talk about her! PSYCHE!! She's a robot. It's a cop out, after all.

So, not really a "Slayer". Just a gay human male who fights vampires.

Hasn't that already been done with Andrew? Sure, he was never "outed" on the show, but I certainly always "interpreted" him as being a gay, male character.

I guess Andrew's whole "character arc" was a baddie who becomes a goodies, so "Billy" will have a different character arc. But, it does seem somewhat derivative of Andrew's character.

    Shouldn't the headline be

A Gay Male Character in Buffy... Not That Shocking.

And in other news scientist have confirmed that the Earth is indeed orbiting the Sun.

I'm really hoping Billy was the kid who was somehow bringing nightmares into the real world during early Buffy.

Well it certainly seems like it's controversial to some people...

Yeah, there's about 17 lbs of irony flying right over that guy's head.

"WHY DO WE KEEP GETTING THOSE F'KING ISSUES PUSHED ON US IN COMICS?!!!!!!!! THEY SELL LESS!!!!"

Because you keep reacting like reverend Lovejoy's wife whenever a gay character touches your comic book.

    "IT SHOULD BE A NON-ISSUE!!!!!!!!"

Yes, your all cap rant aptly proves the mundane nature of this occurrence.

Must we theatrically yawn away this news? Is snark preferable to curiosity?

"I wonder if the next new character will be Muslim?"

Today's conversation on practicing-Muslim women could actually be a really interesting story if told with finesse. Consider that the entire Slayer mythos is rooted in feminism. What if a Muslim girl in a Middle-Eastern country had been Chosen? That's a heavy, heavy story.

He's not a slayer, hes a guy who learns to fight vampires.
Him being gay is just a way to get attention since the idea of a guy without superpowers fighting vampires doesn't mean anything, xander did it in the show, gunn did it in angel.

    Ha ha. THIS ^

If any book/franchise should NOT be accused of pandering or following trends it's this one. Buffy & gays go together like PB & J. Makes perfect sense to add a gay male character.

It's not about getting attention and just to differentiate himself from Xander. From the looks of it he's looked up to Buffy & the Slayers for tgheir ability to fight back against the bad guys. That's what he has wanted to do himself but for different reasons entirely which him being gay makes all the difference.

Adding a gay male character isn't an issue, saying"WE HAVE A GAY SLAYER!" whenthe actual story is "We have a gay version of characters you have already seen" isn't.

    Cause that's a zippy headline!

And like espenson said in the article, is pessism and snark really the best approach to inclusion?
