Alan Kistler concludes his exploration of the men that have played Superman, picking up after Christopher Reeve and going all the way up to Tom Welling in "Smallville."

It's a good article, but it could do with some fact-checking re: actor and character names. It's Christopher REEVE and George REEVES, and Reeve played Dr. Swann on Smallville.

Also, Dr. Swan told Clark that his real name was Kal-El, not Jor-El (as that would be his father's name)

I should have capitalized SWANN. It's the small things.

Agreed. I just sent the following to the writer:

Re: "He didn't even learn where exactly he came from until Reeve's character, Dr. Swan, revealed to the young man that he had come from the planet Krypton, and that his true name was Jor-El."

    It was Kal-El, not Jor-El.

I liked Routh as Superman, shame he didn't get another chance.

I didn't like Routh as Superman but I also didn't like that he wasn't given a proper chance to show what he could do. The suit didn't suit him. The contacts were distracting. The script was too dark.

I'd have preferred a different Superman but I'd like them to make the most of whatever resources they end up with. Maybe that's what Routh did but the final result of the project was lacking.

i have a confession i dont like the richard donner superman movies all that much. i like superman 2 ok but 1 bored me for most of it. i did an experiment in the 90s asking ppl what their favorite part/scene was. overwhelmingly it was otisville. if the best part of a superman movie is ned beatty its not a good superman movie. i hated doofy clark kent.

Your flawless and scrupulous dedication to the scientific method in conducting this research astounds me (especially since there's no "otisville" referenced anywhere in any of the SUPERMAN movies).

Then I am as well. I did love Superman: The Movie when I was a kid in 78, but later viewings doesn't hold up at all for me. Reeve is perfect as Superman, but I hate, hate HATE the Clark Kent portrayal. It's bad vaudeville. Gene Hackman is incredibly charming and funny, but Ned Beatty helps to ruin any scene he is in.
