I didn't much care for that one. If you're looking for a single issue with a whole story, you can't beat "The Man in the Pit" from Wolverine #56.

Aaron has his moments but his Marvel work can best be described as usually over the top.
Aaron's an excellent writer, I think some people just can't stand their X-books to be fun and whimsical, preferring things to be dripping with angst and an air of genocide hanging over every character's head. Considering the rediculous technology seen in the "serious" X-titles as well as FF, Iron Man, etc. nothing Aaron has put into the books is really that outrageous.
Here's one that jumps out...
Ghost Rider #34 featuring the Highwayman by Jason Aaron and Tony Moore. One of the coolest Marvel comics ever.

As for Aaron's best writing - his Vietnam Vertigo mini "The Other Side" is ace and of course his Scalped work.

Valiant comics: All (!)
Marvel: Avengers/NA/UncannyAvengers, Aaron's Thor, UltSpiderMan
DC: Anything by Morrison, Azzarello's WonderWoman
Other: Hellboy, Cobra Files, Hellblazer TPBs
That three or four issue run with Moore is just excellent in general. The Highwayman issue is probably the most accessible for someone who hasn't read the rest of the run, but I'm really fond of the Caretaker issue, with all the historical Spirits of Vengeance.
Knuckles O'Shaugnessy!
I also think his Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine mini-series would be a good entry point. It didn't get that much attention because of its slow release schedule, but it's got a nice blend of quirky reinterpretations, over-the-top high concepts, strong character work, meticulous plotting, and left-field (but obvious in hindsight) twists. Spider-Man and Wolverine try to stop a bank robbery and end up on a trip through time, from prehistory to post-apocalypse.

I like his work. He takes chances and tries stuff that others are too scared to do. That's why I'll be picking up his run on Thor.

"Crazy" can mean all kinds of things to all kinds of people. It can be an insult or a praise.
I'm kind of ambivalent about his work. I've enjoyed some of his WATX, parts of his Hulk, but there are other parts... I mean... the whole thing with Kitty's Brood pregnancy... c'mon now. And the story of going to the space casino went absolutely nowhere. And none of his new students are really any different from any of the students we've had for years. They just have different paint jobs. They're just redundant.

I'd say the one where Wolverine was down in a pit getting tortured was his best, but I doubt Thor will be anything like that.

WATXM is the most fun I've had with an X-Book in YEARS. Maybe ever. It has the big-idea flair of Morrison's New X-Men, without the pretentious "writer is is smarter than you" feeling, and has all the fun of classic X-Men tropes like Baseball games, only instead of baseball games it's gambling in an international resort for money to keep the school open. It's ballsy and fun, and I love it.
