People wondered the same thing about Darth Vader. But Vader was once seen in Empire Strikes Back meditating without his mask on. Perhaps Bane in his League of Shadows training had learned meditation techniques that would allow him to have the mask off for short periods, techniques not easily utilised in the heat of battle.
