    Default Dynamite's Buck Rogers?

I've been looking for more of this kind of "pulp sci-fi" style. I love Tom Strong and I'm currently enjoying Atomic Robo very much. Even Grant Morrison's Action Comics has the same feel. So having said that, is the Buck Rogers series any good? I haven't read anything by Scott Beatty.

It wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. It had a fun vibe to it, but nothing that was mind blowing. The stories never had that "OH WOW" moment that would've made the series exceptional, but they still were enjoyable. I wouldn't say they've got much of the "pulp sci-fi" flavor you've mentioned though.

You might like Kirby: Genesis, given the titles you've mentioned.

It was okay. It didn't work well as a single issues, where you read one every month, but collected they are okay.

My suggestion would be Dan Dare by Garth Ennis. I think Dynamite published it as a trade. Kirby Genesis might also be a good idea, especially Captain Victory.

It wasn't Boom, it was Dynamite.

    It was just ok.

They tried to update Buck Rogers, and not sure if they did a good idea.

The first storyline was their re-write of Buck's arrival in the future, with the NorthAm Org menaced by a different threat then the old Mongols of old. I actually thought it was a big silly. If they have such high tech, why did they not take care of this enemy before Buck came around. Somehow I think some writers don't think things out.

Sadly, the whole series was kind of left on a cliff hanger.

Now Hermes Press will be doing a new Buck Rogers comics with Howard Chaykin. It remains to be seen how this turns out. Chaykin is one of those writers that too often goes off the tracks with his own ideas that don't always work with certain characters. If he (or Hermes) can keep that in control, they could have a good thing.

I remember the series ending on a cliff hanger, but that was resolved in the annual. It has been quite a while since I read the series. Did the annual also end on a cliff hanger?

Hmmmm. I thought I had the Annual, but I might have missed it. I see from comics.org that it came out months after the last issue, so that is a strong possibility.

Cool, I'll try these. I've been just recently reading Kirby's New Gods saga, so this will be a good time to check out Captain Victory, and possibly any other Genesis book.

Edit: Captain Victory looks a lot like Orion, or is it just me?

Kiry indicated in the original Captain Victory series, I believe, that Capt Victory is Orion's son and the grandson of Darkseid. He couldn't use those characters because they were owned by DC, but there are hints here and there that Blackmass, the major villian for Victory, is supposed to be Darkseid.

If you liked the New Gods stuff, then I really, really recommend that you check out Kirby: Genesis. Honestly, it's better than Buck Rogers, and you should like it more (especially given what you indicate about your interests now).

Oh cool, it actually has a thematic connection to Fourth World.

Sterling Gates is the writer? His Supergirl was decent (nothing exceptional) and Hawk and Dove was a mess.

He was, and it wasn't a bad series. It never really seemed to find it's feet, though, because of delays. The opening arc ends on a bit of a cliffhanger (someone in the Galactic Rangers is a traitor, and they're returning home to find out who), and it's not clear there will be any more stories (i.e. it's not clear Dynamite's continuing on with the series).

Busiek handled the writing chores on Kirby: Genesis, and it reads a bit better (Capt. Victory's also in it).

I liked the series but I have to admit I am biased. I tend to like stuff my Dad (when he was a kid) listened to on the radio or watched as a movie serial or read as a pulp novel/magazine or comic books/comic strips. He is the reason I started reading comic books.
