    Well... yeah.

It's the 3rd biggest movie ever - what else were we supposed to choose?

This summer was no contest. Avengers won. Marvel won. Batman was great, but it couldn't measure up and I think Avengers has raised the bar for summer blockbusters. Next summer is going to be very tough to top.

I think the "Box office summer" typically starts the first weekend of May and runs through the end of July. Typically the biggest box office hits of the year will fall in one of those three months (of course there are exceptions). August and September seem to be slated for "smaller" action movies.

Felt like every type of comic fan won. Avengers, Spider-Man, Batman... I enjoyed them all.

Alright but seriously Avengers did take it.

Wasn't this a bit early? If Total Recall counts than Bourne 4 should count and Expendables 2 as well. Also this is basically Avengers vs Batman why don't we throw Comic movies out for this thread and talk about Prometheus (haven't seen yet), MiB3 (thought it was surprisingly good), Huntsman (haven't seen yet either), etc?

I think this thread is about the BEST movies (or at least highest grossing) movies of the summer. Ghost Rider came out in Februrary and may qualify as the WORST movie. (And, yes, I took it that you were joking)

Avengers won this summer without question. It was simply the most fun movie to sit back and watch, and despite not having the most deep plot ever made the movie, from a story-line sense, is rather solid. It's also a bit remarkable how awesome this movie was when you also factor in how easily it could have fallen on its face. Amazing Spider-Man and TDKR weren't bad movies in any respect, but Avengers was flat out better.

The reason its mostly Avengers vs Batman is because those are the only two big summer movies that have come out that have been almost universally praised and made large amounts of money. Spidey was well received but its behind the pace of Raimi's 3 movies. MiB3 was neat but forgettable. Prometheus was, well, kinda crappy plus its box office pulls dropped like a rock after week one. Huntsmen was alright, but nothing you'll talk about in a few months. Total Recall couldn't top a 3 week old Batman in its opening week.

Bourne 4 or Expendables 2 could surprise us and be a late contender for the Summer Movie crown, but I highly doubt it.

The Avengers and Marvel were the big winners. However, at least DC was in the game this summer, in contrast to last summer.
