Default Who will officially replace Bruce as Batman?

Bruce Wayne is not immortal, and as much as he is loved as batman, he will eventually have to be killed off (probably when they run out of ideas).

So, the question is, who will take his place as the perminant Batman.....?

Does Dick train a replacement for his Nightwing mantle and take up the cape and cowl for good? (Tim Drake would make a good Nightwing)

Does Damian take his father's place as the dark knight?

Kind of depends when he dies. If he dies while Dick is young, Dick becomes Batman. But Maybe if he is a bit older, Tim would take over. Maybe he finally gets killed when he is 70 and some new person takes over.

Officially, Bruce Wayne will always be Batman and be young, but hypothetically, Damian makes sense as Batman while the others continue their own mantles.

I would think it would happen when Dick is in his middle years, somewhere between 35 and 45, when he is still young enough to handle himself. So, I would think that Tim would end up taking over as Nightwing and dropping the Red Robin mantle, while Damian continues as Robin, in the assumption that he will take over as Batman after Dick.

I assume there would be a big fight later on between Tim and Damian over who is more fit to be Batman.

I don't think anyone should be Nightwing but Dick - I don't get where people get this idea that the natural progression from Robin is to become Nightwing once they graduate college. That idea is Dick's and Dick's alone - I don't think Tim would even want to take the Nightwing mantle. That's like if Damian decided to become Red Hood.

Besides, haven't they already done this story? Damian becomes the next Batman, then trains Terry McGinnis to become the next Batman when he's old (instead of Bruce like in the Batman Beyond animated series - they skipped a generation I suppose...but Terry is still Bruce's biological son). But then again, that was all pre-New52 - I'm not sure if that future is still intact.

Dick most likely takes over the mantle for a number of years and trains Damian to take over.

and the reason I would like to see Tim take over as Nightwing is because I like Nightwing more than Red Robin.

It makes sense for Damian to take over. He'll probably be too young tho, so my guess would be Dick takes over for a few years until Damian is old enough.

Damian would pwn as Batman. Would love to see how crazy his arch-nemesis would be

My top three choices would be:

    1. Cassandra Cain after she gets the required education and detective training.

    2. Bane

    3. Tim Drake

Except for Bane, I like the idea of Cassandra taking over as Batman. Makes sense too.

Here's how I see it goin down...

The Joker breaks into Wayne manor and manages to kill Alfred and severely disable Tim Drake who's there to stop him but fails. Batman snaps and kills the Joker by punching him repeatedly in the mouth until the smile is gone and his fist is through the back of his throat. Bruce hangs up the cowl and becomes the Bruce we see in Batman Beyond. Staying at the Batcave providing somewhat of an Alfred roll and running Inc. Since Barbra Gordon is healthy again, a wheelchair bound Tim becomes the new oricle. Dick Grayson then takes over as the Bat while Damian is Robin. We get a new Joker as James Gordon Jr. Fulfills his destiny. Eventually Dick and Barbara marry and often fight crime together as Damian grows into his own and decides to be the Batman of his homeland eventually defeating Ras and Talia. At one point, Barbara is almost killed by her brother in a final showdown which causes both her and Dick to hang it up. Barbara decides to devote the rest of her life to law enforcment after the death of commisioner Gordon to lung cancer. Bruce decides to come out of retirement as things in Gotham spiral out of control in The Dark Knight Returns we now realize the Joker who is killed is indeed James Jr. We ignore the second installment of the Dark Knight Strikes Back and instead Bruce comes accross Terry McGuinnis. Terry and Bruce's stories end when a certain somebody comes back to take the cowl which is rightfully his.... or something like that. Ideally this would take place over 20 or so years of comic reading before the world of Batman 666 becomes the status quo.

Dick Grayson is the only choice for me as to who should replace Bruce Wayne should he fall. Tim Drake, maybe; but I agree with philcho that nobody else should become Nightwing. I really liked the Dick/Damien version of the Dynamic Duo, and would have been happy to see that continue indefinitely.

And this may be an unpopular theory, but I wouldn't want to see Terry McGinnis as canon for future Batman. I'm a big Robin fan, and would much prefer the natural line of succession from Batman to Robin. That's one of they key points about Robin, that Batman doesn't just have a sidekick, he's training his replacement.

It's still 27 years off, but most of us will be around to see the year 2039 when Batman hit's completes his first century of existence. You know who is going to be wearing the cowl? Bruce Wayne, and I find that thought very comforting.

Batman doesn't age... He's a fictional charecter, so yes, Bruce wpWayne is essentially immortal.
