    Default Which Daredevil is this?

I'm looking for an issue but all i know about it is the cover. I hope someone can help.

It's the one where he's sitting, holding onto a huge cross with one or maybe both of his arms slumped over it. I think he has some of his rope tangled around the cross and he's looking down. There was a statue made of it but the statue has him looking forward.

Anybody know the number on this issue? I was looking at it last week and I forgot to write it down.

I've been wanting to buy that statue for a while and I'd like to have that issue to display it with.

    Thanks guys

From the GCD site looks like it's Daredevil 182. Coincidentally, the last issue of Miller's DD I ever read was the one right before that, 181, but I must have seen this cover somewhere because I recognized it from your description.

Oh, gosh. Is that the one where he digs up Elektra's corpse in order to convince himself that she's really dead? So wrong, but sadly necessary in an age of Marvel where DEATH was often treated as simply a "time-out."

I don't know - like I said, I stopped reading the series right before this issue. Which was a little odd, because I remember thinking the previous issue was one of the best in Miller's run. But I remember feeling a bit tired of it for some time before that, so I suppose the one issue wasn't enough to stop me from dropping the series. Memory's a bit hazy at this point.

Well, yeah. The previous issue is "Death of Elektra," a defining moment in any run, and surely one of the most memorable moments in Daredevil's existence. Strange that you remember feeling tired of it; the general concensus is that Daredevil was never more readable. Is it possible you preferred the more adventurous, Errol Flynn-like Daredevil of the Gene Colan era?

Yes, that's exactly correct. I was impressed by Miller's art and writing on the series for a while, but even at the peak of my enjoyment it never really felt like Daredevil to me.

It's totally cool. Like me, you're showing your age. I remember the swash-buckling Daredevil who fought the Stilt-Man and the Jester and Copperhead, and pretended to be his own twin brother (Mike Murdock) for a time, and even thought he had a shot at The Black Widow.

Terrific stuff, but Miller's take on DD's millieu is compelling in its own right, and definitely worth a second look. He did an outstanding job with Bullseye and The Kingpin, such that I think it's worth your time to revisit.

Yeah, I'll probably try to read the whole of Miller's run one of these days. But I think you've reminded me why I didn't continue with the book at the time, in spite of being impressed with #181 - I recall thinking the best thing about that issue was Miller's characterization of Bullseye - the narration, dialogue, everything. He wrote the whole issue as a hard-boiled detective story with Bullseye as the detective investigating Daredevil's secret identity. It was very well done, but one of the results was that while reading it I felt more interested in Bullseye than in Daredevil - which didn't entice me to carry on following the title character's series once that story was done.

Necessary but hardly sufficient nowadays, unfortunately.

Here's the checklist used in the 21st century:

    - Hyping the upcoming death of a character? Check.
    - Character killed? Check.
    - Moving eulogy telling us that this time it is for real? Check.
    - Miniseries surrounding the universe's reaction to the character's death? Check.
    - Confirmation of character's death by the editors? Check.
    - Confirmation of the character's death by Wolverine's LMD-sensitive nose? Check.
    - Confirmation of the character's death by Dr. Strange, Eternity and the Watcher? Check.
    - Animation of a copy of the character which is revealed to be a fake, a clone or a doppelgänger just to emphasize that the character is dead-dead-dead? Check.
    - Someone else's assuming the character's role with the same name and a very slightly altered costume? Check.
    - Character returns to life.

    Wash, rinse, repeat.

Uncle Ben is the only character who stays dead....

Got to love Miller's Daredevil, not only the Bullseye / Elektra saga but the Born Again arc (226-233 I think) where Kingpin sets out to deconstruct and destroy Matt Murdock.

The current series by Mark Waid and Paolo Rivera, Marcos Martin, and Chris Samnee is really good and manages to edge back toward swashbuckling without ignoring the "dark periods" he's gone through. It's really great. The next issue is a standalone drawn my Mike Allred. Maybe pick it up to see if it's up your alley?

Daredevil is a character that i feel has run it's course. Everything has happened to him and it feels like there's nowhere to go.

Give it time, Jez! Used to be, the saying was "only Uncle Ben, Bucky and Jean Grey stay dead".

I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.
