I know there are some graphic novels based on these movies, but I’m interested in how Phase 2—the second stage of Marvel’s creation of a bedrock film universe to take over for its dead print product—will play out. Feel free to disagree. , In any case:
Iron Man 3—The continuation of the most popular individual franchise will revolve around Robert Downey Jr.’s star power and also plant the seeds of what’s to come, serving the same role as Iron Man 1 and 2. There will be even more set up in Iron Man 3, and Rhodey’s purported role as the government stooge “Iron Patriot” makes me think there might be some sort of Civil War setup for AVENGERS 2. Or not. The Iron Man franchise is the flagship, though, and the release of this movie will give a definite sense of direction to how the second stage of the MMU will unfold.
Thor 2: The Dark World—Shaping up to be the sword-and-sorcery, fantasy realm of the MU, misty mountains and Tolkien-style monsters, with more than enough overlap and cross-pollination to keep the various MU movie threads moving toward the Avengers sequel.
Cap 2: The Winter Soldier—This is the SHIELD playground, same as Brubaker set it up. Fury, Widow, Bucky, Falcon, probably Hawkeye (though Jeremy Renner is kind of lame) and Maria Hill.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Starring Will Smith: Pure sci-fi space stuff, tougher than Star Wars. Again, enough cross-pollination with the rest of the flix. I'm thinking "Serenity" style stuff.
Hulk: Try a third solo shot? Marvel can take the hit if it falls below expectations again. But does it want to?
Avengers 2: Just because Thanos made a “and who the heck is that?” cameo in Avengers 1 doesn’t mean anything. Assume this sequel will be fast-tracked and, if there is no Hulk individual movie, he will figure heavily in this one.
Ant-Man—I give up on Ed Wright. The character will show up in a Hulk “bunch of science guys” movie” (maybe Iron Man 3) or Avengers 2.
Black Panther—Who knows?
Ms. Marvel—Linda Danvers will be in a Marvel movie before we see Carol and her blandly generic powerset.
Heroes for Hire: If this indeed in the chute to be a TV, expect premium cable. Not gonna fly on network TV.
