It's something that has been going on for decades upon decades. It also goes beyond just self images of beauty, it ties into perception of class and even morality. colorism is VERY real and unfortunately it's something that million of people across the globe have internalized.

I remember as a kid hearing about issues of girls in Asian wanting surgery to make their eyes appear "more Western white" but I had never heard of skin bleaching till literally a few days ago... decades? Surely the science of it decades ago was horribly obsolete... I mean was it literally 'bleach on skin, wash/rinse/repeat'??

There are companies that actually produce and advertise skin lightening creams. Unfortunately some people DO in fact use actually bleach to lighten their skin. Things like that are why many black folks get angry when photographers lighten the skin of some black celebrities and why some of us in this thread are so offended when colorist screw up and give black characters very light skin.

They used to run ads in Ebony magizie for skin lightening creams and the gist of the ads where that with lighter skin you'd set yourself up better in life. Even if it's not explicitly stated people in society KNOW that you skin color can affect how you are treated and what you can do in life, even if it's not spoken its something that is internalized.

To drive the point home, let me ask you a question. If a people have been taught from birth that lighter skin is symbol of nobility and darker skin is associated with the less desired aspects of society, wouldn't...

1) Skin Whitening seem appealing to some?

2) Be so appealing that it's still a big Industry in some parts of the world?

That stuff does have a less offensive intent, though. It does work on discoloration due to scarring, burns, and acne, which is what it's primarily advertised for. As far as I know, it's not targeted as a skin lightener outside of those uses (and to be frank, it doesn't work all that well anyway), although it could be, I guess.

No, but I'm not exactly tolerant of a practice that's born from an outdated, vile way of thinking that destroys many good perfect self-images. If dreaming that this practice becomes illegal is a problem, then it's a problem. That being said, I definitely picked the wrong product to pick upon. Despite my hate for skin bleaching, legitmate medical products have a place.
