Although I guess if it was lousy, I really wouldn't want to watch more of it.
I actually liked the action/fight scenes (notice that I didn't say "Kung Fu fight scenes") in this movie. This movie was basically a superhero/fantasy movie masquerading as a Kung Fu movie.

No, it was an attempt at doing wuxia. Just not one that was any good. I liked what RZA was trying to do, I just don't think he did a very good job of it.

We were speaking about the No Doubt video and Native culture appropration, before and I stumbled onto this in a similar vein:

This blogger also speaks about the Native Holloween costume thing.

Which is basically superheroes crossed with fantasy, or more specifically, heroic fiction. In any case, some of the characters in this movie were clearly partly influenced by American superhero comics. X-Blade was basically an amalgamation of Wolverine,Manhunter,Swordsman, and Blade. Brass Body was basically an evil Colossus or evil Ferro Lad. The Blacksmith was basically an amalgamation of Iron Man and Iron Fist. Madame Butterfly was an amalgamation of Madame Hydra and Lady Shiva.

I probably would agree with you if I went into watching this movie with high expectations, but those high expectations were quickly dashed after reading some bad reviews of this movie on message boards.

Not really. They're all elements from old kung fu films. Just with better special effects. Saying it's like Colossus is only because you don't know the original source. I mean, you bring up Iron Fist, who was pretty much ripped out of old kung fu movies to begin with. Madame Butterfly was nothing like Hydra or Shiva, other than them being swiped from the same Dragon Lady tropes.

Basically, this isn't superheroes, it's the kung fu films RZA watched as a kid with better FX and shittier martial arts.

I have watched my fair share of Kung Fu movies back in the day (KUNG FU THEATER used to air every Saturday afternoon on channel 5 heare in New York), so I'm quite familiar with a lot of the source material. Now granted, I'm no expert and I stopped watching a lot of Kung Fu flicks a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure I don't recall anyone in those movies able to turn to metal like Colossus (who debut in 1975) and Ferro Lad (who debut in the mid to late 60's). However, you are absolutely right about Iron Fist,Hydra,Shiva, and Madame Butterfly.

It also shows how detached he is with his Milestone comment and that entire board since the one guy who responded to it missed the entire point of Milestone as much as Bryne does

Shaolin Bronzemen. Chinese myth regarding the Shaolin temple, represented by dudes in bronze makeup. Most relevant to RZA probably in 18 Bronzemen. Like I said, Iron Fists is a higher tech version.

For the sake of fairness, here's Byrne's complete follow up post that you are paraphrasing from.

I don't really buy the positive/negative notion. Categorizing someone according to their race is all coming from the same mindset -- the idea that the races are inherently "different".

And it's very telling, is it not, just HOW we do this pigeonholing? It's "okay" to say Black people are generally better athletes, but it's NOT okay to say White people are generally better. . . well, ANYTHING! Because the former is "positive" and the latter is "negative"?

I'm reminded of a Public Service spot that was running on Canadian TV just before I left. "Hire the Handicapped" was the message -- positive! -- but the way the pitch was framed indicated that handicapped people would be BETTER employees because they WORK HARDER. All I could think was, handicapped folk don't have enough on their plate, right? Now they have to be Superman-in-a-wheelchair (or whatever).

I voted for Barack Obama the first time because he was NOT Republican, and because he seemed to have a good idea of what needed to be done.* His race was absolutely not an issue. I did not think it gave him any advantage, and it was not something I had to "ignore".

I recall when Harold Washington (first Black mayor of Chicago) died, and a local Black activist (whose name eludes me) went on TV saying he had promised Washington that Chicago would have another Black mayor. A TV anchor, also Black, asked if the promise should not have been that Chicago would have another GOOD mayor?

    ___

    * I voted for him the second time for somewhat different reasons.
It also shows how detached he is with his Milestone comment and that entire board since the one guy who responded to it missed the entire point of Milestone as much as Bryne does
You say "detached", I say "ignorance".

I did not know that. I stand corrected and retract my earlier posts. I never saw those 2 movies. I still think the movie was pretty good.

    I'm not surprised.

Back in the day, Channel 5 in New York tended to show all the movies directed by the Shaw Bros.

Channel 11 showed...everything else that WASN'T Shaw Bros. They scheduled these movies directly up against each other.

You saw famous karate flicks like 5 Deadly Venoms and Master Killer on Channel 5.

The lesser acclaimed Bronzemen movies and thier ilk were all on 11. Since 5 used to show all the classics like Venoms and Spearman Of Death, nobody I knew watched channel 11 karate movies either unless they were utterly burned out on watching them on Channel 5.
