Different styles of classic artwork from your favourite artists

Where else has a favourite artist of yours shown up in comics, with a completely different style? So much that you might have passed it completely without ever knowing....

Here's one of mine...he did this back in August 1960...



And here's what he's been dishing out recently 50+ years later....



I'm alluding to Neal Adams of course...

John Romita Jr. and Keith Giffin are two artists who completely changed their styles over the years. Both were much for the worse.

I really can't believe that either of them could look at their past style compared to their newer style and say "hey this looks so much better!!!!" But I suppose they did.

It's kind of depressing, because they were two of my favorites in the past but no more.

The Jack Kirby of the 1940s looks nothing at all like the Kirby of the '70s, not in draftsmanship and not in storytelling. If I weren't familiar with all the work in between (and thus can see his style evolving), I would find it hard to believe they were the same guy.

Just to clarify I still think both artists are quite talented. It's just that their newer styles don't work for me and I much prefer them before the switch.

JRJR's new style just looks like everyone is made of blocks and Giffen's looks like everyone is melting! Some people probably love that and that's cool, but they aren't for me.

The Neal Adams comparison is a bit off bcause he had to draw in the Archie house style or they wouldn't publish it. A better earlier comparison would be with his work on the Ben Casey newspaper strip.
Similarly Barry Windsor Smith drew Kirby style on his debut with Marvel in the Xmen. His new style developed later with Conan

I really liked Giffen's "new" (post-Munoz) style, though not as much when he stopped spotting blacks (e.g., Trencher)

See, now i was re-reading the Mr. Miracle TPB a couple of weeks ago and was struck by how much Kirby's thugs looked the same as the ones in his 40s and 50s work.

It's the first Satana story from Vampire Tales 2. It's been reprinted in both the first Vampire Tales volume and Essential Marvel Horror, vol 1. To say it was a change of pace for John, Sr is an understatement.
