Default Hey guys, need recommendations for a birthday gift

I wanta get my buddy a good graphic novel or comic collection. I know plenty of comics that I love, but his tastes are somewhat different than mine.

I want to get him a good gift for his birthday even though I don't have a lot of money. He was there for me big time in the hospital when I had cancer last year.. he even gave me his copy of the Hitchhiker's guide while I was in the hospital because he knew I had lost mine years ago. AND this guy is a very young guy who became a Dad earlier than expected, and jumped into the role and took responsibility immediately.. so he really doesn't get to spend much money on himself. That stuff is just the explanation for why you'd want to help a complete stranger find a gift for his friend.

On one hand, he is into sci fi and absurd fiction like Hitchhiker's Guide and what not.
Also I know he's a fan of Scud, but if I got him that, he'd probably already have it.
But his biggest hobby is the whole D&D larping etc. stuff, which I have no understanding of. So something fantasy might be good.
He is also into midievel weapons an armor, and pretty much all cool weapons in general including firearms.
It'd be easy to get him something he'd like, but I'm hoping you guys can drop me a good recommendation of something that would be perfect. I know Indy is the way to go if I want to give him something that he hasn't heard of, but will be awesome.

Currently, my top pick is "I Kill Giants". Can anyone think of something better, or is that the way to go? Thanks in advance.

Well it's not a fantasy book but if your friend is into weapons and armor as well as medieval history then I would recommend Crecy by Warren Ellis from Avatar Press. It's a historical graphic novel about the battle of Crecy in which the British utterly destroyed the Norman invasion due to an innovation in longbow design. As dry as that sounds, it has Warren Ellis' trademark cynical humor and it has a lot of great, violent moments. Historical fiction is not usually my bag and I typically go for Ellis' sci-fi stuff (Planetary, Transmetropolitan) but for the history and weapons buff that's what I'd recommend. Only downside is its fairly short.

For more fantasy/medieval comics, here are a few recommendations:

    -Skullkickers (Image)
    -Demon Knights (DC)
    -Northlanders (Vertigo)

Hope this gives you a few ideas!
X-O Manowar. Harbinger. Bloodshot. Archer & Armstrong. Swamp Thing. Dial H. Captain Marvel. Hit-Girl. Saga. Prophet. Read my reviews of these and more at The Comic Book Couple!

I Kill Giants is a fantastic read.

Maybe he'll like Chew, Mice Templar, Skull Kickers, Hellboy, Jersey Gods

Thanks man, I found crecy on Amazon new for 6.99, so that leaves room for another book.. so maybe I'll do the I Kill Giants Titan Edition and that one.

Yeah he'd like all those, and he loves hellboy.. but I doon't want to get him anything from a series. I want it fairly self contained.

Orc Stain's a great-- albiet sick-- fantasy read. There'll be a new edition of the trade soon, if it hasn't already hit.

EDIT: Oh, and there's some great noir from the time of the Vikings in Brian Wood's Northlanders.
"'Kirby got a shitty contract too, so get over it' isn't a great tagline."
