I'm looking into getting some trades. I have not read Jurgen's Thor run. How is it? Is Thor depicted as a badass or is he a total wuss like he is portrayed in AvX? Story interesting? Thanks guys!

He's pretty bad ass.
Apart from the Dark Gods, he took down Mangog and Thanos (later revealed to be a clone) in a single issue.
Adults struggle desperately with fiction, demanding constantly that it conform to the rules of everyday life when the answer is obvious to the smallest child: because it's not real. - Grant Morrison
I think it kind of lost it's way towards the end of it, but the beggining of it is quite solid.
Peace
Yeah, it kind of went off balance with the final Asgard on Earth arcs, but it sort of corrected itself enough that Oeming's Disassembled followup fit like a glove. Jurgens' run is the reason I actually found myself liking Thor, so I definitely recommend it.
THE BAD:
the donald blake replacement Jake Olsen and his overall story arc sucked and was drawn out WAY TOO LONG
some of the art sucked.
some of the arcs meander and wander aimlessly
THE GOOD:
the Death of odin arc with surtur and art by stuart Immonen (ultimate spiderman, fear itself) was really damn good
the dark gods arc was good
alot of good villians (the dark gods, Desad slayer of gods)
Jurgen's run made me get back into Thor after a very long hiatus. I agree with your comments Wellman. I think one of my main problems with Thor is the human side, BUT, I understand why Marvel would want or feel they need that - even though they don't seem to worry about his power set any more.
I'd definitely say the Death of Odin is one of the most enjoyable Thor arcs I've ever read.
Wake me up when it's over...
Jurgen's run was great. There are a few ups and downs, but it starts out very strong. You get a wonderful slice of the Thor universe.
The second half doesn't work independently and The Reigning only works as the genius it is if you compare it to the first arc. Thor is in the first arc everything Thor should be and he slowly loses his way, the people who rein him in (Odin and Jane) disappear about half way through and it isn't until The Reigning that we are shown the consequences. Loki and Enchantress take full advantage. Its the only run that long that I would say actually has a satisfying thematic arc.
That isnt to say Jurgens doesn't miss some bits. Some plots do get dropped and some characters make out of character decisions at the start to set up the plot Jurgens tells but it improves as it goes on. Its a bit like a chess board.
Jurgens run is fairly legendary. I mean, it was a four year run that did have some lulls, but was epic in scope. He know how to write Asgardians and relate them to everyone else through strong dialogue. John Romita Jr. did a lot of the art in the beginning and it was great. I highly recommend getting the trades.
I guess I'm in the minority in that I felt it started off slow (even dropped it at one point) but started getting really strong midway through. Still, overall very good run.
A Fool for the Foom
Jurgens and Epting's short Aquaman run was, IMHO, fantastic. Too bad Larsen's run had wasted all the momentum PAD brought to the book, and they couldn't save it from cancelation. DC is really bad in reprinting good old stuff (specillay from the 80's and 90's) but that is one run I wish I had in TPB.
Peace
It's very, very good. Early years bright and fun--I'm not the biggest fan of JRJR, but was fine with the art, here--later years more intense and sometimes excruciating as Jurgens plays out his ideas to their logical extremes, but also some of the most gorgeous art on Thor books, ever, through this period. Could say a bit adrift towards the end, but it all got anchored down solidly with Oeming's Disassembled.
