An Australia local news affiliate snagged behind-the-scenes footage of James Mangold's "The Wolverine" featuring a possible World War II connection with sets depicting a Japanese P.O.W. camp.

In Hollywood when in doubt go back to the WWII well. I know Wolverine has connections to many wars but I'm burnt out on WWII.

Is it rebooting the other movie? Or is it just for a flashback?

I'd like to see a superhero film partially set in WWI myself. I kid you not, I have spoken with college kids who truly believed WWI was against the Nazis and WWII against the Japanese, and I had to explain WWI was against the German empire before Nazi was even a thing, and WWII was against the Nazis and Japanese both (at least for America, I don't think any of the European Allies also dealt with the Japanese, but I could be wrong). Some more WWI in fiction would be somewhat of a change of pace. WWII is done to death.

Heck, the American Civil War would be ripe for a superhero thing as well. The south made (crappy/unsuccessful) submarines, maybe something could be spun out of that...

My understanding is that it's a 'sequel' to X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, with an entirely new cast (apart from Hugh Jackman) and crew. When Darren Aronofsky was on the project he said that it wasn't a sequel in the conventional sense. By that I imagine he meant that it wasn't going to pick up on any plot-threads from WOLVERINE, but it also wasn't going to go out of the way to violate that film's continuity.

If it does in fact take place during WWII (I am guess it's just a flashback, but I certainly could be wrong), then would they be dealing with Wolvies bone claws or will they find a way to work in the adamantium claws? I thought it was pretty clear that he got the adamantium skeleton WELL after WWII in X-Men Origins.

The real problem with the whole idea of Wolverine is that it is a ridiculous and over the top character that needed to be killed off decades ago.Various creative teams over several years of Marvel Bullpen BS sessions continued to add increasingly convoluted and unbelievable nonsense to the so called origin to the point where even some Wolverine fans around here have called for a total retcon to eliminate almost all of the turd that Marvel has piled on for over 30 yrs. .I avoid most of the X-Men canon because Wolverine is constantly inserted.Even thought Giffen is totally disdainful of Lobo at this point maybe a Lobo film can be made that will ridicule Wolverine off the big screen once and for all and maybe we'll see the Wolverine character take a major back seat in the comics as well.WW2 themes are a lame attempt by Marvel to find a political common ground that everyone can agree on in our hopelessly polarized country for commercial gain and in itself is disrespectful of everyone who participated in that era.A common thug, murderer, and assasin that somehow becomes a superhero and all is forgotten.Whatever True Fans, whatever. All of this made by Aussie carpetbaggers who have pulled the rug out from under the American film industry courtesy of Marvel.
