Can someone explain this to me, i'm not really up on my law.
He killed 12 people, but is charged with 24 counts of first degree murder?
And then, he injured 58, but 116 counts of attempted?

From MSNBC: "The murder charges included one count of 1st degree "murder with deliberation" and another count of 1st degree murder of "extreme indifference to the value of human life" for each victim."

It was the first news thing that came up in Google, and it had the info at the top.

The law is such a strange thing. Does it have to be this bloody complicated?

Why didn't you just read the article to find out? It was explained in the article.

Why comment on an article you can't be bothered to read? Frustrating.

I think there's no doubt Holmes will be found guilty on all those charges, unless an insanity plea is accepted, which I worry about. It's not as common as most people think, but I believe there's a possibility that argument could be accepted in this case.

I commend the CBR staff for keeping the community up to date on new developments of this horrible tragedy.

Personally, I do agree with the practice of several news agencies on keeping his name out of the headlines, it would be a gesture worth thinking about. Also, the Batman/Dark Knight Rises imagery doesn't necessarily need to be used as art.

Arvandor: I think due process is especially necessary in this instance. It's his right, and ultimately no verdict or sentence will be adequate.

why give him an out? just let him sit there and become more and more irrelevant. prison's no vacation. i doubt that the lack of freedom has emotionally impacted him, yet.

Monty_Cristo, my response is directed not at you, but at Holmes.

Why should the good people of Colorado have to pay to keep this guy alive in prison? Haven't they suffered too much as it is? That's why I said death penalty. I couldn't give a flying figure newton what this damaged kid thinks or feels, he should pay for what he did. I do not think the death penalty is an "out."

Many serial killers are not forgotten in prison, and the sad thing is, he probably won't be forgotten.

Didn't comment, i questioned, and Stonegold answered in one sentence, thus saving me the trouble of reading the whole article or clicking the link.

The news is doing a good job of making a celebrity of him. He won't be forgotten soon. I'm not saying this is a good thing.

This thing is a cluster@#$% on so many levels the impact will likely be felt, for, well, a hell of a lot longer than I'd like to think about.

The thing is, he shot children. He killed children. If he goes to prison and is put in the general population, he won't last. The worst of the worst look down on people who commit violent crimes against children. They will kill him, eventually.
