Default love or hate new alan scott?

So i have red earth 2 #3 like 15 times lol and i am wondering what everyone thinks of the new alan scott.

Personally i love the fact that that really didint change his personality at all from what it was before there is no difference besides ya know...he likes dudes. Which i think is something i have come to like about alan the way they set it up wasn't anvilicious it was protrayed just like any hetero relationship which i think is great thing and made me actually feel like it wasent forced.

plus the man clearly has gigantic huevos

a talking green flame just drafted him into his war on evil and scotts reply...."bring it"

im glad Scott is recognizable as the same charecter.

It bugs me a little that they made him gay. And I'll tell you why. It's not cuz I'm homophobic. It just seems like such a gimmic to please a specific group of people. I have no issue with creating a new character and making them gay but it just rubs me the wrong way to reinvent a known character to make them gay. Theres no other logical reason to do something like that other than to please a group. It's the same reason making spiderman some black Hispanic kid bothered me.

However that's my only gripe. Because other than that, he's awesome. I like the introduction to his powers. I like the motive. I like how everything in that universe is familiar yet independent. Earth 2 is one of my fav books.

Yeah, I also like the new Alan Scott. I liked he is basically the same character at his core but reinvented for a new generation. and also liked he is taking his Earth's Superman position as its protector.

QFT. A character's race, sexuality, religion, and gender is part of what makes them them. It's like if they turned Batman into a girl (Brianna Wayne) in the New 52. I actually told my friend that when the New 52 was happening he FREAKED OUT.
Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker, Professor X, Mar-Vell, Richard Rider- Bring Them Back!!!

I like what I've seen so far. I have absolutely no problem with his change in sexuality because you can't take a cast of all white straight men and say how diverse they are. So between changing them or erasing them, I think the right choice was made. I'm interested in the character but he's has just showed up and not done much yet.

Agreed. I'm not saying the way it was done was bad. Just that it was done. But honestly earth 2's uniqueness is so well done to me it doesn't effect my likeness for the book in the slightest. I just wish they didn't do it that's all.

About 10% of human beings are gay. About 0.01% were gay in comics before the New 52. This coincided with the situation that existed in modern society in nearly every single moment up to the present one: the situation that homosexuality has been taboo and homosexuals have mainly remained closeted.

So is DC saying characters used to be straight and now they're gay? Or are they saying things have changed and it's no longer necessary for so many characters to remain in the closet? Or are they simply saying we're starting over and while we do so we're going to take the opportunity to make superhero comics just a little less strictly about straight, white males and just a tiny bit more like the actual world they seek to reflect?

To create a ton of new gay characters (or black ones or Asian ones or whatever) to resemble a more accurate reflection of our society would be to ghettoize them; to make their very reason for being one of diversity. Alan Scott isn't only gay; his whole life doesn't have to be about that. Nor is Ryan Choi only Asian.

Is it your suggestion that DC makes up the difference with a bunch of "Bunkers?" Because, if so, I don't think I'd much enjoy that approach, regardless of socio-politics.

I like him more than I did prior to the reboot..he was always kind of dull to me.
I'm sure they can still figure out a way to introduce Jade and Obsidian..especially if Robinson is playing with the idea of the Infinity Inc. being from the future ala Legion of Super-Heroes. Being gay doesn't necessarily explain away his ability to have children, they could just state that they are test tube babies.

There are thousands of gay fathers that conceived their children in that most traditional way of having sexual intercourse with women. Many were even married to those women at the time. If Alan Scott hadn't been de-aged so, he could easily have had Jade and Obsidian before coming out or perhaps before even realizing he was gay.

As for the OP's question, I like the current Alan Scott fine. I feel like the gay thing is a little ham-fisted in the way it's being handled but that's natural -- this is relatively new territory -- and I think the creators all have the best intentions.

I'm enjoying Earth Two a lot. None of the characters are exactly setting me on fire yet, but it's a fun book and I'll keep reading it as long as that's the case.

Well it's not like they're making 10% of comic heroes gay to match society. They're putting a few gay characters into the mix so that those who are gay have a more relatable character. Which makes perfect sense. But come on. Make your own character. What happened to the creativity? We create new heroes all the time. Albeit a lot less frequent than past times. You wanna make a character gay? Make a gay character. Make someone knew and have them be incorporated into something popular. They did that with teen titans and I was fine with it.

They also should have picked another character that had less depth in a family tree. As mentioned above, Scott has a child pre reboot. You just limited the realisticness of jade happening.

Why not booster gold? Why not make him gay? The guy hasn't been with women often if ever. His one companion is a freakin robot. There's nothing hanging to his character like that of Alan Scott.

I don't care nearly as much as I'm making it sound like I do lol. I'm just debating for the sake of conversation in case that isn't clear

I have no experience with the old Alan Scott, so I have no basis for comparison. Just going by what I've seen in Earth 2, I think he's an ok character. He seems like an adequate successor to Superman. However, I don't really find him that interesting. Maybe that will change with further character development. Or maybe it won't. We'll see.
    Current favorites:

    DC: Smallville, Supergirl, Detective Comics
Marvel: Ultimate X-Men, Scarlet Spider, X-Factor, Thor
Other: Saga, Angel & Faith, Buffy
