Default Aspiring manga artists and their art

Ever since I made the announcement of how Infinity Comics has started a tokusatsu style manga imprint, I've been hit with a deluge with art. Some good, some with potential and some not good. But for the most part there is something which ties them together. A great deal of them don't bother to learn to draw backgrounds or panels or furniture, cars, trees, etc etc. It's almost always floating figures in a style that's too similar to the style seen in the shonen style magazines. Does anyone here know how to draw panels, backgrounds/etc, and in styles other than Full Metal Alchemist or Naruto?

But I haven't been going out for comics contracts, because I'm all too aware of the work that's involved. It's a full-time job. I also don't consider myself a "manga artist"... I've been influenced by Japanese art but also by a variety of other comics, including European and classic American material. I can turn the knob further over to the "manga" style if that's what the job requires, but more than anything I'm largely influenced by my career in animation.

If you'd like, you're welcome to check out my portfolio and some of my work and contact me with more details.

The inability to draw environments and objects is a common failing amongst aspiring comics artists. I had the same problem until I buckled up and realized a few things; perspective is VITALLY important, anatomy isn't just about people (it's about everything), and environments/objects are characters, too.

I should mention that when I do comics work, I charge a real page rate. If you're looking for someone to do work at $50 a page (or less) to "gain experience", I'm not your man.

Shouldn't this be moved to Artist Showcase if this dude is actually trawling for artists?

Well, in that case. There is a propensity to just draw minimal backgrounds because backgrounds take a lot of work and doing something simple with just one colour or just white on white is an easy way to make your characters in the scene pop out more.

A more recent thing that you can see in the works of Oka Hiroya is using photo reference to make CG backgrounds and then just drawing characters into the scene. It makes for a weird visual aesthetic but it looks okay.
