I've read a lot of literature since high school that suggests it was more about the way of life in the South. The South was driven by agriculture and thus needed cheap, or rather free, labor. Thus if slaves became free people they would have had to pay them thus destroying the economy.
The North had moved into the industrial age and stuck their noses up to the South and their way of life being agricultural. They thought they were better then the South, as the North forced small children to work in their factories.
Now of course a lot of this is angry rants by Southern Agrarians I stumbled upon during graduate school.
Edit: And I said it was a half truth. We focus on slavery as the cause of the Civil War and that was only part of it. That was more my point. It is just like how we are taught that Benjamin Franklin was a noble man, all the while we have documentation that he had lovers in Europe that he was seeing while he was arguing for American freedom.

If it's about "free labor to support the economy" it's still about slaves.Chris S. has odd angles:

Now you've just confused me. I don't think Ben is portrayed as particularly "noble". In fact, what he was good at was the behind-the-scenes "salon" politics that were the then-current fashion in Europe, particularly France. Ben was a manipulator and oft-times liar when he thought he needed to be. He was more a "classic politician" and that's not really all that noble. In any case, whether or not he could keep it in his pants in an era where mistresses were commonplace doesn't really speak to his "nobility" one way or the other.Edit: And I said it was a half truth.
