I don't know that anyone here is really anti-DKR. Your quote here is definitely how I feel about it. I liked it a lot when I first read it, but it definitely feels like a relic of the Reagan era. I'll never forget those super-dense 16-panel pages, though, and regardless of how crazy Frank Miller gets, I'll always like his art style (even if I hate the subject matter).

    Batman Adventures: Mad Love
    Batman/Captain America
    Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
    Batman: The Killing Joke
    Batman: Reign of Terror
    Batman Vs. The Incredible Hulk
    Batman: War On Crime

Off the top of my head, BATMAN SPECTACULAR (or DC SPECIAL SERIES # 15), was the first book that came to mind. Some of the best Bat-art collected in one issue----Marshall Rogers, Michael Golden/Dick Giordano, and Mike Nassar/Joe Rubenstein doing their very best Neal Adams.

One I haven't seen mentioned yet is BATMAN: THE ORDER OF BEASTS by Eddie Campbell. Sort of an homage to the Golden Age, filtered through Campbell's unique style. Very neat.

    Batman Adventures: Mad Love
    Batman/Planetary: Night On Earth
    Batman: Black & White
    Batman: Harley & Ivy

And if Legends Of The Dark Knight counts: Gothic, Faces, Blades, Masks, Hothouse, Criminals, Engines, & Blaze Of Glory (one of, if not the last great LOTDK tale).

Mention of Batman/Superman made me remember the Karl Kesel mini, which I really enjoyed. One of the best pairings of the two in my opinion. I liked the start of the ongoing Batman/Superman but it declined fast for my tastes.

Batman Two Faces by Abnett & Lanning. Can't believe I forgot about this one.

    Since it hasn't been said

Nice little romp through the history and a look at the various Batmans.

I've never read the Planetary Batman. I really don't even know anything about Planetary. But your memtion of Batman - LOTDK (which is like an ongoing series of one shots and minis and the best Batman title for my tastes) reminds me of another great Abnett & Lanning story, Dirty Tricks in issues #95-97. Plus Anthony Williams art is the icing on the cake.

Batman Special #1 "Player on the Other Side"
    Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: Dark Detective (Engelhart/Rogers reunion that means more if you've already read their original run)

And, if they count, Legends of the Dark Knight issues...

Planetary is Warren Ellis's love letter, homage and tribute to comic boos (and their history), certain literary figures from England, superheroes, and a love for the strange and unknown; a definite modern superhero classic, IMO.

That was how I felt about Superman/Batman as well, though I think it had a pretty strong end as well.

Not a bad-ass Batman cross-over, but still a fun one:

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned. But there was a one from the early 90's with Two Face, think it was called "Crime & Punishment", J.M. Dematteis wrote it. Who was one of my favorite Spider-Man writers.

Batman 450-451. It was just cool seeing Joker return after killing Robin, he was holed up in some dingy hotel room all depressed and talking to himself about how he lost his sense of humor. Funny stuff.

Batman 452-454. Dark Knight Dark City. Prob my favorite Riddler story. Had kind of an elseworld feel to it, it had demons and freakin Thomas Jefferson made an appearance.
