Want to read Judge Dredd; but what should I even get?!

I dig the IDW series. From what I gather, it's not as dark or gritty, more of a cape comic than the "real deal," but it's very fun and at least very respectful. With Classics, Year One, 2000AD, back issues, and trades, I think something different can be afforded.

I've heard numerous times that Case Files 4+5 are better places to start as they contain some of the better early stories (Block Mania, etc.)

As for the colour/B&W thing, it depends on the artist. A number of 2000AD stories are black & white but it depends who's drawing. Dredd tends to be in colour these days, however, and has been for about 20-25 years, if not a bit longer.

Well the rumour seems to have reached IDWs ears as well since Block Mania is the first of their Judge Dredd Classics reprint in colour.
