Opena & Cassaday's Marvel NOW! Captain America Designs Revealed

Marvel has released Jerome Opena and John Cassaday's Captain America designs for the upcoming Marvel NOW! publishing initiative, giving fans a closer look at the Sentinel of Liberty post-"AvX."

I am usually not a fan of the bulky, padded with straps and wot-not look...as oftentimes it is just too much and the details are lost in panel. And it often proves difficult for other artists to maintain any sort of consistency in the design...but it's not bad, if a tad overworked. I actually like/prefer the painted wings on the helmet. It is very "military" and less "superhero". I'm thinking that may not go over too well with the zealots.

While I like the art on Opena's designs, the suit looks way too busy and baggy. I like John's redesign better. It adds some of the new elements, but keeps more of a classic feel to it.
Also, this would seem to confirm the rumor that Remender will be taking over Cap's solo book.

It's a little funny how this design is based on the movie design which is based on Bryan Hitch's Ultimate design. Ultimate Cap will soon be the only Cap around!

Yeah, it is clearly heavily influenced by the movie, which means it has the same issue as the movie, the suit just looks off balanced without the actual head wings. Looking at that last pic, head wings would make it look 1000x better. If I were cap the first thing I would do in Uncanny Avengers is find Namore, take his little freaky cankle wings and staple them to my face.

I don't like it at all. Stupid military-inspired Ultimate outfits... Also, the lack of proper head wings is disturbing.

I hope this costume is temporary.

i dunno...there is sort of a disconnect with cassaday's design. There is no element present in the upper torso that will make it in sync with modern design of the bottom.

Opena's looks more like a movie costume. IT'S GORGEOUS!!! i like the 3rd one. Stars on the shoulders proves to be kinda busy. the star attracts attention...so just one star on the chest is suffice.

I figure the fish scale was hard enough to draw.

This ups the difficulty factor by 10.

It seems to have more buckles, pads and what not than even the Ultimate version.

I give it a year before the poor sods who have to draw Cap regularly, revolt behind this.

I dislike when each individual piece of chain mail is drawn. Other than that it looks good - standard updates that one would expect.

Funny thing is the people who run 616 (Bendis, Hickman, etc.) are basically Ultimate U guys.The MU as a whole has been moving toward a more Ultimate U style since Bendis and Millar became the architects around '06.Hey, it was gonna happen at some point. And will continue to happen unless they give the MU over to somebody like Kurt Busiek.
