"Marvel Comics brings the Avengers to face one of the greatest threats in the Marvel U for "Avengers Assemble" #7 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley and have released a teaser image bringing that threat to new heights. On an image with the words "Who Needs An Infinity Gauntlet?" emblazoned across the top, the Mad Titan Thanos stands triumphant with the Cosmic Cube in his grasp.
Introducing Thanos and the Cosmic Cube to "Avengers Assemble" is an understandable move on the part of the publisher... "
WTF? Marvel does know that Thanos has had a Cosmic Cube before, doesn't it? God, the way they put it, it's like Bendis invented water or something.
Peace
This is not something exclusive to Bendis but it seems like anytime certain people try to do something cosmic, they either crib off the original Infinity Gauntlet story or then try to one up it.
...Isn't the Infinity Gauntlet much much MUCH more powerful than the Cosmic Cube?
To answer the ad's question:
Thanos. Thanos needs the Infinity Gauntlet. He got nowhere with the Cosmic Cube before, and at least marginally better with the Gauntlet.
On another note: are they going to follow up on Johnny Storm's possession of a Cosmic Control Rod (stolen from Annihilus)? Seems like a pretty big dangling plo thread.
The line doesn't say it's introducing Thanos or the Cosmic cube to the marvel universe... it's saying it's introducing it to Avengers Assemble. So it's not really taking credit for the creation of either concept, or the story idea behind it. It's just saying it's being introduced to this particular title.
Is anyone else sick of Marvel shoving their Movieverse down our throats? Why can't we enjoy the comics without them adapting to the current run of movies? What is going to happen in 10 years when the movies are old news and the characters are still going strong? This reminds me of the 90's when all of their books looked like Image. Artwork ifs with all of their cross hatched artwork and big shoulder pads! As a comic reader of 40+ years I'm tired of the big two telling me that my favorite comic book stories no longer exist!
This will have zero affect on anything in any other book so who cares?
Schmitty's Evil Twin.
He got nowhere with the cube (after using it to become a god btw) because he allowed himself to be duped by Mar-Vell into becoming mortal again, not because the cube wasn't powerful enough for him. He's allowed himself to be beaten time and again, no matter how powerful he becomes, because deep down he doesn't feel worthy of that power. Hope Bendis doesn't forget about this part of the big guy's personality.
However it's well established that a cube is nowhere near as powerful as the guantlet, or the ultimate nullifier, and were you to even try and compare the cube and gauntlet in terms of sheer power (cube still comes up short) it doesn't possess abiltities to control the other aspects like the gauntlet, such as mind/soul. Probably space/time as well.
The earlier post about the gems not being able to be used in unison is sort of a valid point though. If it's true that the gems can't be used together (and there's a bit of a grey area there), then you can argue the cube might be power powerful than the gems individually.
The cube would likely be simpler in a way, but the Gauntlet at full is way more powerful. I guess it makes sense if you look at it like that, but it almost seems like they are trying to say the cube is the more powerful item.
This bugs me becasue its a regression of character for Thanos. He has already tried and failed with the cub and the gauntlet far too many times. Its been done, to death, literally.
Thanos stopped caring about it in "Samaritan" and then sacrificed himself in Annihilation to be with death. He was then revived and raged becasue he didnt want to come back to life. This charatcerization is completely off.
