Default Being Grant Morrison: From "HAPPY!" To MorrisonCon & Beyond

Grant Morrison is preparing to move into the next phase of his comics career, and the writer tells CBR the saccharine origins of his Image series "HAPPY!", the end of his monthly superhero work and his plans for Las Vegas' MorrisonCon.

Now that I have a new job with a flexible schedule, I'd love to go to MorrisonCon. But at $750 for the lowest tier package, it's out of my price range.

Sorry, but Grant need to get his head out of his ass regarding the pricing of the tickets. Yes, there are going to be other creators there, but for the lowest price, I can go to Mega Con or Florida SuperCon and spend the same amount on art work/commissions.
    Who's there?

Morrison isn't running the con, and he didn't set the ticket prices. I don't mind people criticizing things they disagree with on the boards, and I can stomach hyperbolic phrases like "get your head out of your ass" (way to raise the discourse, man), but if you want to speak out about a policy on these boards, please read up enough to know who you're criticizing.

While I'm at it, I might just add for argument's sake that logistically, running a small event at a hotel where no booth space or artist's tables are set up let alone charged for can change the buy in for a con organizer. You can argue easily that $750 isn't worth it for you to go to a non-traditional con, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the price isn't what the event can cost at a 1,000-person capper.

Hmm, I'm actually pretty depressed about this. I slogged through 25 years of sub-par Superman stories, then finally was given a Grant Morrison Superman in ACTION COMICS. Now, 16 issues later, its over!?

I was hoping for a six-year run, like Batman. Guess I'll have to drop Superman again...

Exactly how I feel, though I've been reading for much less time.

Sad to see him leave superhero books after having such a great year on Action and his recent work with Batman, but I'm pumped for his creator owned stuff. If his talk about working on some screenplays leads to any finished products, I'll be thrilled to check those out.

Morrison is the only thing saving the current line of Superman books. What are they going to do without him? There have been so many false starts with Supes lately. I was really hoping Morrison would stay on for years and they could build around that.

@the_DFC -- You said pretty much exactly what I was planning to say when I read this article...and much better than I would have said it. I wholeheartedly agree! Morrison on superheroes is cosistently great...Morrison unleashing his own wild concepts, unbound by continuity and larger editorial plans, can be absolutely amazing! It can also sometimes be a bit unwieldy...but I find he does his best creator owned stuff while working on (or just slightly after) he's done some great work on superhero properties. The Invisibles, We3 and Joe The Barbarian come to mind. He manages to keep the best aspects of a more rigid story structure that a shared universe demands (though he masterfully challenges those while writing within it) and that helps give anchor to the wild...WILD...concepts that he has floating in his head that you know he saves for his own properties. Those that have loved him on Batman, Xmen & Superman, but have been reluctant to venture outside of established superhero characters to find his work, should really give this a try.

I think the guy needs to recharge his batteries. Action Comics has been entertaining.. but I'm still not sure how relevant or necessary; juxtaposed against what Johns/Frank just did 3 years ago updating both the origin and Brainiac.. or the more grounded take JMS just did in Earth One. JMS can be very hit or miss himself..(The Grounded story was TERRIBLE) but I feel like what he's doing in Earth One is a proper modernized update of the character more than T-Shirt & Armor Superman... and judging by the early teaser, the movie seems to be following the Earth One take more than anything else. But I can sense a loss of steam with Morrison on both Action and Incorporated.. And I can't say I'll be entirely disappointed in 6 months when the creative team on Superman gets free of the Morrison embargo on the use of the bulk of the history and characters in the Superman universe.. it's made for some extremely mediocre stories in Superman; and apparently no small amount of frustration for Perez and the other creators.. That said, Grant, thanks for the ride!

I really enjoy Morrison as long as he has boundaries. I know he'll provide some great stuff for those who like his weirder stuff but for me, he's best when he has some checks and balances for his insanity. When he can do whatever he wants, it gets scary.

Despite Morrison being (arguably) the only scribe in God knows how many years to try something remotely novel or noteworthy with Big Blue or The Caped Crusader's books, I'm not actually that saddened by this development. Despite my ongoing love of Batman, Inc. and my looking forward to Multiversity, I still could never quite shake the feeling of Morrison flexing his artistic muscles beyond the superjocks. That, and comics such as Punisher MAX or Brubaker/Phillips' outings, and TV dramas like Breaking Bad or Justified have given me more of a taste for crime and/or noir these last few years; so Happy!-- cartoon pony and all-- sounds right up my alley.
