Something about the backdrop of wilderness on the road mixed within the Indian myths in the story really made an imprint with me. No doubt about it...American Eagle was as cool as Spider-Man for me back then. That was also my first introduction with the Klaw, of whom I hold as one of the more underrated Marvel Villains to this day.

But the American Eagle never appeared in any comics I bought after that, and became something of an enigma to my younger self. I remember hearing rumors from friends about his appearances in other comics, but never had the chance to experience them myself. I've since re-purchased the issue and although it isn't as spectacular as I remembered it, the nostalgia is still there.
I liked this one as well. I believe it featured some nice Ron Wilson artwork.

    Right arm please...

The most absurd and funny thing (pun not intended) about that early issue of the series is Ben takes a bus to get to Florida!!!!! WTF?!?!?!?! Like he somehow can't call the other FF members and ask them for a lift? He's always complaining about being put in humiliating situations and just decides to take a bus? Again, WTF??? Still, it was all in good fun.

Which issue of Team-Up has Doc Savage? I snapped up the Two-in-One with Savage when I saw it... I like to collect stuff that is out-of-print due to rights issues.

    Non-responsive....

I just googled it; which was a better option in the first place. Apparently the issue I as asking about is a Giant-Size Spider-Man, not a Marvel Team-Up.

Is this one out-of-print too? I know most of the old Shang-Chi material is in IP limbo because of Fu Manchu...

Doh!!! Sorry, I just had MTIO on the mind because I've been reading some early issues recently.

For MTIO, I liked The Serpent Crown Affair (#64-66), #75 (Thing & Avengers vs. Annihilus, Blastaar & Super Adaptoid in the Negative Zone).

My favorite MTU is #100 (Spidey & FF, 1st appearance of Karma, plus a backup featuring Storm & Black Panther that everyone forgot about for 25 years until they decided to have them married. Claremont, Miller, Byrne.)

GSSM was basically a spin-off of Marvel Team-Up, published quarterly when Human Torch stories were running in Team-Up.

My favorite Arc was MTIO 61-63. It included Starhawk, Her and a creepy , raised Corpse of Adam warlock. It kind of belongs in the Warlock collection between the events in MTIO Annual #2 and Silver Surfer #46 where Warlock is joined By the Surfer inside the soul Gem.

I loved that storyline. You get to see the Thing give Moondragon a spanking.

I feel like those were the only great issues in either run. The concept of a team-up book is appealing to me, but the execution often seemed formulaic. And sometimes a team-up issue was just used to wrap up an abandoned storyline from a canceled comic. Anybody remember Skull the Slayer? Other times, it seemed like a team-up appearance was being used to give a boost to an unpopular character. I liked those issues, because I was easily fascinated by Marvel's more obscure heroes back then.

Doc Savage? I was a big fan of his at the time, thanks to the Bantam paperback reprint series with those great covers. But I couldn't stand the Marvel comics featuring Doc Savage, because they colored him bright orange. I realize now that they were struggling with a limited color palette back then, but that orange still offends my eyes. Look at that MTIO cover, Doc is more orange than the Thing.

This was exactly the case w/me. As a kid I didn't have enough of an allowance to buy many comics, so MTU was the perfect "gateway drug" for me into the Marvel Universe.

I was reading MTU during the Kerry Gammil era, #s 119-129. They were great fun IIRC. I even went so far as to re-buy them in the late 90's, after trading them away in the 80's.
Comics still reading: Saga, Sixth Gun, Walking Dead, All New X-Men, Daredevil, Fury MAX. DC New 52 isn't the worth the paper its printed on...

This may interest you then. Some months ago, I pointed out that the cover to MTIO #54 was reversed. I'm sure it was purely an aesthetic editorial decision, meant to fly comfortably under the radar, but it jumped out at me immediately. The lack of insignia on Deathlok's breast, the fact he holds his weapon (which connects on the wrong side) in the wrong hand, and the movement of Ben's injury from his left to his right hand (which the story doesn't support) all stand in evidence. A real oddity:

I seem to recall some people being a bit peeved at Deathlok's story ending with him lobotomized and then destroyed. Of course it didn't stick. Great issue.
