    Superman presented aspects of the American Dream that appealed to a broader audience. He's a refugee - or immigrant depending on how you interpret it - who grew up in humble American roots with decent family values. It also helped the fact that Donner's movie came out when America was trying to get over its loss of the Vietnam War.
