Awful review, that doesn't even defend it's own points. Seems to me like the reviewer just wanted to disparage for the sake of it, sadly.

Hoping to get noticed by swimming against a wave of good press, perhaps?

That said, CBR's reviews are the least worthwhile part of the site by far, with reviews not even being fact-checked before publication previously.

I don't think it's for the sake of being contrarian, given that CBR isn't alone. While IGN gave a sterling review, Comics Beat gave the book a poor review (and it was an advance review - basically the first online) and Newsarama only gave the book a 7 (again, another advance review).

    So the praise isn't unanimous.

You do realize the Comics Beat review is by one of our very own X-Board posters, right?

    So?

The fact remains that there are differing opinions and that praise isn't unanimous. If you choose to believe that those with differing opinions from yours are crackpots, that's one thing, but trying to suggest that a negative review is given solely to be contrarian and garner hits (not even sure how that works), you should probably take the tinfoil hat off.

And as far as CBR goes, I generally find that the problem with their reviews is that they rate too highly, as opposed to too low. Just about everything seems to get 4 stars.

The CBR review just came out. It got two and a half stars. SO far, the reviews seem mixed overall. Comic Vine gave it four stars.

i liked it. my worries about the art have been alleviated. but i'm kind of anxious to get past this pilot story. i want to see her go up against some more supervillains.

My thoughts on the book are mixed. I enjoyed the opening battle with CA and the training with Spidey, but it started to lose me once Carol was in that old woman's home (I already forgot her name) making coffee. I don't have anything against seeing the "home life" aspect of superheroes, but that part of the book just didn't interest me at all, nor did the subsequent diner scene. I wanted more action!

I was hoping that issue 1 would be more exciting. Instead, most of the issue was devoted to Carol deciding whether or not to become Captain Marvel. I really don't know anything about Carol or Mar-Vell, but it seemed a bit much. Maybe she did have a really good reason for being reluctant to take the mantle; I don't know. If she did, it wasn't clear. Unless it was just that the previous Captain Marvel was a good person and she didn't think she was worthy? Meh.

As for the art, I liked it for the most part. There was one panel in particular in the beginning that made CA look like Smeagol halfway through his transformation into Gollum. It was bad. Aside from that panel, though, I thought the art was good.

Overall, I thought this was a decent first issue, though lacking in some areas. It also doesn't really compel you to pick up the next issue. I'll probably wait a few issues, then catch up and see where it's at before deciding if I want to add the book to my regular pull list.
    Current favorites:

    DC: Smallville, Supergirl, Detective Comics
Marvel: Ultimate X-Men, Scarlet Spider, X-Factor, Thor
Other: Saga, Angel & Faith, Buffy

Here is the official marvel.com page about the sell-out:

I guess this means the book will not be canceled after issue 6!

    Honestly, the issue wasn't bad.

It was mainly a reintroduction in who Carol is, did a decent job, although some of the newer readers might be wondering who some of the players are, but overall, it was decent and the costume grows on you. This Cobb business does have me worried, that the first story arc will be a bit boring, but one has to let things air out before being able to cast judgement.

I hate the fact that she let Steve Rogers name her however, especially since given the dialogue accidentally I assume makes it came off as the 'demotion' that they were just joking about during the fight.

I agree. Books always lose me when they do this.

First Marvel book I've picked up in a long time. Loved it. Had to get used the art, not the art style I am used to in comic books.

I'm surprised the book is getting mixed reviews so far. I thought it'd be generally more toward the great end, not half and half.

I guess people wanted more dumbed down and upfront action and clunky dialogue. They probably got mad that no other Marvel characters show up in the latter half.
