...I'm pretty sure I didn't start a review thread yesterday. Am I hallucinating?

The body language and use of panels/layouts is just so expressive. Soy's storytelling here is excellent, IMO, especially for his first book.
...I agree, wholeheartedly. The art here is something that works better with slow reading and taking in every panel - skimming doesn't do it justice, and I can see why skim-readers who get through the issue in 2-3 minutes might go "ugh!" at it.

So, skimmers! Sit down and take the time to enjoy and absorb the panels and your opinion may change.

Fraid not. Bad art is bad art (or, in this case, 'wrong' art'). No amount of looking at it is gonna make it look any better. I dunno, maybe if a squint a bit... and stand further away.

That's not to say this might not be the case for other readers. But for me, art is an immediate thing. I see it. I judge it. And this ain't for me.

In a very weird way, I'm actually glad I don't like the art on this book. Until I saw it, I was considering the possibility that I might not pick it up purely because I hate the new costume so very much, and even I had to admit that was being a bit daft (as well as quite shallow) - Particularly as I have complete runs of Carol's two previous solo books and loved 'em both, and she's still one of my favourite Marvel characters. Fortunately (in a manner of speaking), the artwork made the decision to not pick up Carol's latest solo outing a whole lot easier.

Rejoice! The moderators have deemed your post worthy to split it and those that followed off into a thread of its very own! Don't you feel honored and special?

This book was poetry in comic form. I loved every page and panel of it.

I am happy to see the first issue getting such a positive response. I hope that it some how manages to build up momentum and work its way up the charts over time. I do enjoy KSD's writing, and I love the relationship between Carol and Peter. She's like his new best bud or is that the other way around.
Why aren't you reading Winter Soldier? You should be!

While I thought this issue was very well written I was expecting a little bit more "epicness". I'm not sure how I feel about the art, in some places it worked very well but I'd rather see Jamie McKelvie on this book.

I'm definitely in for the first 6 issues to see if it's one I'll want to keep around, but I'm just not sure what the direction of this book is supposed ot be yet.
My Heroes For Hire: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, The Falcon, Ant-Man (Scott Lang). White Tiger IV and Powerman would be interns.

I loved the story. I didn't love the art. But I'll try to muddle thru.

I had to look up what the 99ers are.

Its an association of Women pilots.

I had thought it was an Occupy reference and I was pretty damn confused.

The art is good...but probably better on a book like Moon Knight or Daredevil. Not entirely sold on the new costume though. Otherwise, a really cool issue! Loved seeing Carol's brother, even if it were a flashback. Hope to see more of her family (though is her Dad dead now?)

    I enjoyed it.

It's very difficult for me to call an artists work "bad" because I empathize with the time and effort put into the work, but I feel the art is just a bad fit for a Captain Marvel book.

There weren't a lot of hooks to be able to figure out the overall direction of this book, but it was a nice done-in-one story. Almost a welcome change of pace from all the decompressed, single plot point, talking head issues that seem to be prevalent now. Carol and Captain America take down a villain, Steve and Carol discuss a change of moniker, Carol confides in Spidey a bit, Carol sees an old friend and learns of one of her heroes passing, and a very heartfelt letter is layered over a flashback of her meeting that hero, attending the funeral, and releasing the ashes into space. Pretty beautiful, really.

    Love the new costume.

I'm only really sorry for fans of the old Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell. All I can say is, sometimes death is better. He's safe from a million retcons, out-of-character actions, revamps, and all sorts of dumbskullery.

    Long live Captain Marvel.
Captain Universe is not Monica Rambeau. Monica Rambeau is not in Avengers.

I'm starting to think that Miss DeConnick based "Helen Cobb" on a famous American female pilot named Jacqueline Cochran(1906?-1980)

I believe it would be Ms. DeConnick. Or maybe Captain DeConnick would work better.

She mentions who it is in Gillen's podcast, but I've forgotten.

She mentions a couple places being very inspired by the women of the Mercury 13 program (which would have included Jacqueline Cochran) and specifically Jerri Sloan Truhill and Jerrie Cobb.
