The Illuminati really shouldn't use the Infinity Gems, but I have a terrible feeling they might since the Gems are pretty much the only reason they still exist as a group.
What would the consequence of using the Infinity Gems be? Aside from random plot device I mean.
Well, it would break the Illuminati's promise to themselves that they would never use them. It would reveal their existence to the world (the superhero community at large thinks the Infinity Gauntlet was destroyed and the Illuminati disbanded). And it would likely corrupt whoever used it, since to hold the full Gauntlet is basically to be in charge of everything.
But mainly it would make the plot too easy if one of them could simply wish the Phoenix away and put everything back to the way it was, so either they don't use it or they try but something goes wrong
That said, Professor X has the Mind Gem hidden somewhere, and I'm sure he's tempted to break it out now that he feels responsible to restrain the Phoenix [Numeral]
With that being said I'm inclined to think the gems won't be used as with four issues left I don't think we have time for another out of control ultimate power.
But I think you also mentioned that without the gems the Illuminati don't serve much other purpose. Is it possible to use the gems separately with less dangerous results?
The Infinity Gauntlet gives the wearer absolute control over the whole of reality. It'd be more than sufficient to handle the PF I would think.
That said, I think you're right -- the individual use of the gems would probably fall somewhat short of being able to deal with the PF effectively.
I'm trying to think who has which...
Namor - Power (Red)
Captain America -Time (Orange)
Professor X - Mind (Blue)
Doctor Strange - Soul (Green)
Iron Man - Space (Purple)
Reed Richards - Reality (Yellow)
