I vote for:
iZombie (about to be over, so you can get the whole thing soon)
Fables (great series, I buy it in trade)
Unwritten (my personal favorite)
Everyone Loves Sandman. I just got the first couple of trades, but have not read them yet, so cant give my own opinion. It is a classic though.
Preacher
Transmetropolitan
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing
Sandman
Hellblazer (Garth Ennis' run, though a couple volumes are out of print for inexplicable reasons)
Y: the Last Man
Fables (up until War & Pieces anyway)
100 Bullets
Scalped
The Invisibles
DMZ (maybe, I have mixed feelings about this book)
The creator-owned books on there are considered by many to be the magum opuses for their respect writers.
As far as series still running right now, I'd say that American Vampire and Sweet Tooth have very good chances of joining that list.
Went to a used bookstore tonight (1/2 price books) and found a bunch of Transmetropolitan and Sandman books, so looking forward to reading those. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
When it comes to Transmetropolitan, my usual first question is, "Did you like Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas?" If the answer to that question is YES, then Transmet is right up your alley. If NO, then you probably won't love Transmet.
My personal favorites are:
Preacher
100 Bullets
The Filth
The Invisibles
Flex Mentallo
The Sandman
Y: The Last Man
Hobos frighten me. It's time my enemies shared my dread.
Scalped. Above all the rest, easily.
Other must reads:
Transmetropolitan
Daytripper
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing
Doom Patrol
The Sandman
The Invisibles
Garth Ennis's run on Hellblazer
The Unwritten
Sweet Tooth
American Vampire
Once you've caught up with those, read DMZ, 100 Bullets, Y: The Last Man and Lucifer. That should keep you busy for a while.
Just adding my voice for:
WE3 (Morrison?)
The Sandman (Neil Gaiman)
Lucifer (Mike Carey)
Preacher - Ennis
The Unwritten (Carey)
Moore/Bissette's Swamp Thing
Morrison's Doom Patrol & Flex Mentallo
Fables (Bill Willingham) & Fairest
Ex Machina (Brian K Vaugan)
(I agree about different parts of, writer-dependant) Hellblazer
& thanks to everybody for helping me remember some of my favorites!
Matt
