Default What are the "must have" Vertigo titles?

I am currently reading Preacher and LOVE it! I am really new to Vertigo and looking for some suggestions to what other Vertigo titles I should check out.

    Hmmm.

    DMZ (Brian Wood)
    Northlanders (dito)
    Scalped (Jason Aaron)
    The Invisibles (Grant Morrison)
    WE3 (dito)
    Transmetropolitan (Warren Ellis)
    The Sandman (Neil Gaiman)
    Lucifer (Mike Carey)
    The Unwritten (dito)
    100 Bullets (Brian Azzarello)
    Swamp Thing (Alan Moore)
    Fables (Bill Willingham)
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

Everything Peter Milligan's done. That'd be Shade the Changing Man, Skreemer, Enigma, Human Target, The Extremist, Greek Street, The Bronx Kill, and his current run on Hellblazer, starting at issue #250.

Sandman Mystery Theatre is Matt Wagner (see also Madame Xanadu from Vertigo).

Nobody mentioned Preacher? Not my favourite Ennis-work, but it usually is on this type of list. Doom Patrol and Animal Man were Vertigo titles as well weren't they? Books of Magic was good as well. I really liked Daytripper from the recent Vertigo output.

But it really depends on what type of book you are interested in, jericko. Basically the big categories are mature superhero, modern fantasy and crime (there is always stuff that doesn't fit in any of them; Northlanders is historical fiction, Transmetropolitan is sci-fi/satire etc. and putting these works in categories is doing them injustice, but makes this a bit easier to find out what you're interested in.).

Jericko began this thread with describing his love for Preacher then asking for further suggestions. I can't believe I forgot Books of Magic though! I never read Doom Patrol and never finished Animal Man. Daytripper was great, but it's hardly something I'd reccomend to everyone.

They've all been mentioned but my personal faves are Transmet, Sandman, Lucifer and 100 Bullets.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I just finished book 2 of Preacher yesterday and can not wait to start Vol 3 tonight! I already picked up Y The Last Man and 100 bullets but have not read them yet. I think I am going to start looking for Sandman, Transmetropolitan, and DMZ next as those look pretty good. I put all the suggestions in a excel sheet and will read all the reviews on Amazon. Thanks again!

After the first year, SMT was co-written by Steve Seagle. Seagle had previously worked with frequent Wagner collaborator Tim Sale on The Amazon for Comico, and Wagner felt he had a unique voice with an incredible gift for dialogue and offered him a chance to collaborate on SMT. The results speak for themselves, I think.

Transmetropolitan is a personal favorite of mine. I just hope you're not easily offended, because Ellis doesn't pull any punches...

Ellis not only doesn't pull any punches... he viciously attacks you with a bowl disrupter set to "anal volcano"
