Default Guardians of the Galaxy $0.99 Sale + Marvel Questions

First off Guardians of the Galaxy is $0.99 per issue over at Comixology.com for its Marvel Monday sale.

    Questions

I was wondering if this would be a good place for someone to start off reading Marvel comics. I just started reading graphic novels/comics about 2 weeks ago and have read Batman:Year One, The Man Who Laughs, and just started Secret Six. I'm going to continue reading Batman and wanted to expand a little more into some Marvel stories. I know the Guardians of the Galaxy aren't your typical Marvel characters but ever since I saw the bad-ass Rocket Raccoon in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I've been interested in learning about his back-story. Plus, they just announced the movie and its got me even more intrigued to learn about his team. I'm a fan of plenty of other Marvel characters from the movies, shows, and games but some of their stories are so huge I was going to wait until MarvelNOW! to try out some of the bigger names(Spider-Man, Deadpool, Avengers, X-Men, Captain America)

So is this as good as any story to try out for a Marvel comic?

Are there any tie-in stories I should know about before reading this?

Do you think MarvelNOW! would be a good starting place to try out some of the bigger names or should I just check out what's going on now?

    Any other suggestions?

I think it helps to be familiar with Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest before delving into GotG. However, the stories themselves are pretty well written and you don't necessarily need to know the history of the characters to enjoy their interactions and adventures. At 99 cents an issue, it certainly doesn't hurt to pick up an issue or two to see if it's to your liking. I personally love those GotG stories, along with the other Marvel cosmic stories that were running at the time.

Because these are cosmic adventures, don't expect the group to interact with some of the more familiar Marvel characters. You won't be seeing any current Avengers, although some of the Guardians have served as Avengers before.

    Yes!

Jump right into Guardians of the Galaxy.

I had just gotten back into comics right around the time it started, and knew nothing about the Events leading up to it. The first issue catches you up right where you need to be, and the ride is great.

At some point you may be interested in learning more about the history of these characters, or even just the recent history, and then I'd recommend looking for the Annihilation event books that came before.

But I sincerely don't think you're missing out much if you dive right into the series from #1.

Decided to pick up #'s 1-18 which is all that they had on sale. Sadly, they don't even have #'s 19-25 on the digital store yet.

Sigh > this ties into way too many events and the trade paperbacks are commanding stupid prices. Despite wanting to read what Jack Flag is currently up to, I'll wait. I am sure Comixology will do another sale before the film comes out.

I've never really read this series in whole, so I bought issue #1. Thoroughly enjoying it, and I'll be buying issues 2-18 shortly.
