MarkAndrew at Comics Should Be Good
The quiz question said not counting Archies or funnies, so that left out a lot of possibilities like Mutt n Jeff, Real Screen Comics, Leading Screen Comics (which started as Leading Comics), all from DC--and the grand-daddy of them all, Famous Funnies, from Eastern Color, which started in 1934 and came to its end in 1955.
Then there's Dell Four Color which included a lot of titles under that umbrella. Also from Dell: The Funnies, which started in 1936 and became New Funnies and ran until 1962; Walt Disney's Comics and Stories; Red Ryder Comics; Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies Comics.
From Fawcett there was Hopalong Cassidy, which began its run in 1943 and ran until 1953, when DC took over the title and the numbering with issue 86, running until 1959 and issue 135.
And Harvey had Joe Palooka, which started in 1945 and ran until 1960.
