Lets face it folks comic book/graphic novel movie adaptations that are rated R just don't seem to do well at all.

the rating wasn't the problem...at least here in the US

no one knows who Karl Urban or Judge Dredd is, save for the crappy Stallone movie

I agree in part that Judge Dredd doesn't have enough visibility here in the states but there have been other characters more obscure that did a lot better.

But i stand by my conviction with what i said before i cannot think of a single R rated comic book/graphic novel interpretation that did well at the box office.

A History Of Violence and Road To Perdition both made a profit, but their subject material was probably more palatable to a general movie-going audience.

Wow i didn't know that, my only guess would be that they aren't action films and don't need to acquire as much money back to make a profit?

    Wanted, 300, Kick-Ass.

That's off the top of my head.

I think this is another situation where the trailers said absolutely nothing about the film. It was John Carter all over again.

Glad you enjoyed it! Have you seen it in 3D? One of the best uses of the medium so far, particularly the Slo-Mo sequences.

Plus, they were standalone movies and they featured organised crime; rather than sci-fi concepts or superhero fantasy elements.
The casting and direction probably helped, too.

Good movie, well made, it was definitly non-Hollywood. That being said I don't know that it required for an uproar from certain fans saying that it should have been more successful and that people blew it. It was the perfect rental for me. Like most Statham flicks for example.

Well it was essentially a British low budget film made in South Africa and watching it again it's clear that it's not an American film even though it tries at times.

The good news is the DVD is doing exceptionally well in the UK and seems to be doing ok in the US so the vague possibility of a sequel is still knocking around.
