    Default The CBR Review: "Dredd"

"Dredd" is a dark, gritty, beautifully violent film with highly impressive 3D, a simple yet exciting story and a standout out performance by Karl Urban's chin.

    Default Wagner Positive

At the recent Glasgow Comic Con, John Wagner - Dredd's co-creator - was very upbeat about the film. The crowd were quite anxious, and he just about managed to convince them it was "pure Dredd", despite his admission that shots of contemporary vehicles was a bit jarring. A thimbs up from Wagner is not to be sniffed at.

So, if this "Dredd" is "Wagner Approved", then... AW FUCK!!!!!! My Lawgiver MkII will be very hot for the perps who will make noises into the theatre!!!! Grud.

About "classic" cars in this movie, I think that the movie is from the early years of the "newly" founded Mega-City One. Which is very excellent because, there, we can have a lot of sequels to come to the Mega-City One design used in the first Judge Dredd movie (fuck Stallone!!).

Just an idea: with all the actual technologies in movie making, could we have a "Revised" version of the first Judge Dredd Movie in which we will never see the fucking face of Stallone?? And to re-do some scenes and sequences from A to Z in full CG?? And please, use the Karl Urban voice over the sissy one of Stallone...

A blatant rip off of Raid:Redemption but I guess not enough people will have seen that movie to care.

Will see the dredd movie nonetheless even though there's nothing original about the story at all.

The Dredd screenplay was written back in 2008, and leaked onto the net in its entirety back in 2010. The Raid didn't even start filming until last year. It's pure coincidence (and like you say, not an original plot in either case).

Next person who mentions The Raid gets 10 years in the cubes, punk!

Does the film state what year the film is set in? There seems to be this misconception that Dredd is years in the future in a lot of reviews/comments, yet the first Dredd story is set in 2099 when he is already a veteran judge.

It seems to me that the comics are a vision of the future as seen from 1977, whereas the new film is that same future as seen from now.

I don't know if it's been officially stated, or how closely they're following comics continuity timeline-wise, but the general vibe seems to be that it's quite early in MC1's history, possibly before the comics begin. (Especially with Anderson being a rookie.) So it's probably meant to be set maybe 60 or 70 years in the future, not over a century like people seem to think.

I think a lot of people doing basic research into the comics probably pick up that the current stories are set in 2130-something without realising that the characters have been aging in real time for decades. Karl Urban definitely isn't supposed to be playing Dredd as a 70-year-old.

I thought this was come out this week and was wondering why it was being sent to die.
Then i realized it wasn't, maybe it's actually good?

So are you saying that Raid:Redemption may have been a rip off of the 2008 screenplay for Dredd?

Either way, I'll still be going to see the movie as I've been a fan of the character virtually from his inception.

Have we read the script of Judge Dredd?
Because it's the look of the film that's the same as far as i know, though i haven't seen Judge Dredd...and neither has anyone else.

Well, if anybody ripped anybody off it would have to be them, but most likely it was just pure coincidence. I did hear that the Raid guys supposedly rushed to get their movie out as fast as possible when they learned that Dredd had a similar plot.

I'm amazed by how good all the reviews have been so far. Sounds like everybody involved is a big fan of the character and really trying to get it right this time.

I don't think Raid director Gareth Evans has ripped off Alex Garland's screenplay. The two films take some very basic elements, that are familiar from a number of films, and do something very different with them.

    The reviewer is TOO biased.

We have yet to see DREDD.
