Whedon believed the debate went beyond just Republican and Democrat and is now between people “trying to make it work” and people who have “gone off the reservation,” Whedon concluded to giant applause.
You left out Whedon's clarification of who he meant by "gone off the reservation": conservatives, especially religious ones.
He's absolutely wrong, of course. I'd expect it would be hard for a guy working in Hollywood for big corporations to accept that he and the ideology he inherited are the problem. Takes a lot of self-awareness and courage to make that break, completely changing your worldview to fit reality and knowing you'd likely never work for big $$$ again.
