New Mutants: who gets reassigned, who gets limboed

So as we know, the latest New Mutants volume is ending with issue 50. Which leaves the question of what will happen to the cast? Arune Singh commented yesterday that the title ending won't mean the end of the characters.

If history is any judge, odds are some of them will be absorbed into other teams, and some will go on the shelf for a while. When the first volume ended, Wolfsbane immediately moved to X-Factor and Cannonball and Boom-Boom to X-Force, with Sunspot and Rictor not far behind. But on the other hand, Dani, Magma, and Karma (all of whom were written out before the book ended) all made no more than cameos for years. Rusty and Skids never regained any real prominence. And Cypher, Warlock, and Magik stayed dead for many years.

That being the case, here's a thread to speculate on what will happen to the cast. For each character, what are the chances in your mind of them going to another book, what are the odds of them going to limbo? Not that I expect it to stop some people, but the goal isn't to rip on characters you dislike. Don't say "xxx will go to limbo because THEY SUCK!" Try to actually step outside your personal feelings and rationally consider who's likely to stick around and who isn't.

Here's my take:

Wolfsbane – N/A, never on this version of the team. With X-Factor’s roster being cut in half, she still may be limbo-bound, but I’d bet on PAD keeping her around.

Cannonball – N/A, already gone. Although since Legacy is ending too, he’ll probably be scooped up for another book.

Karma – Already gone from the team, but I’m guessing limbo bound. Maybe it’s because her powers are hard to write for (either “possesses everyone immediately” or “gets KOed immediately”), but she keeps getting shuffled off to care for people in the background.

Magik – 80% odds of staying in a prominent role, after her recent bout in Uncanny. Doubt she’s going anywhere.

Dani – 70% chance of remaining active. Most writers seem to love using her, but the lack of powers and the fact that Sam’s more popular work against her. Plus there is a precedent for her disappearing for years.

Cypher – A dark horse choice, but I’m giving Doug 50/50 odds on sticking around. He hasn’t been a breakout character, but writers have seemed to try hard to give him things to do since his resurrection, including having him save the day in Second Coming. And in today’s world, his abilities are much more useful than in the ‘80s. I doubt he’ll be in the field much, but don’t be surprised to see him pop up semi-regularly in a support role at the school or, uh, wherever the other team lives. Or (hope hope hope) even in X-Factor for an arc, since Rahne still apparently doesn’t know he’s alive.

Warlock – 10%. Sorry, ‘lock, but you don’t fit well with the standard types of mutant stories the X-books like to tell and you’ve barely made a blip in any book outside of New Mutants. Mmmaybe if Doug sticks around and writers want to keep them a matched pair, but I’m calling Warlock returning to space to check on Tyro. With helpuppy in tow.

Magma – Man… 20% at best, I think. She just hasn’t been given anything to do for almost 50 issues. The Empath thing never went anywhere, the Mephisto issue was fun but more about him than her, and she’s not one of the omega mutants writers turn to when they want to depict ridiculous power feats. Could be wrong, but I’m not seeing anything beyond a behind-the-scenes support role for her.

Sunspot – Tough one. I’m saying 40%. Working against him is that he hasn’t done much in the current title and doesn’t seem to be any current writer’s pet character. HOWEVER, he has shown to have staying power in the past and is one of the more recognizable members of the class. But I’m betting on Bobby being back-burnered for a while.

Blink – 10%. Nobody other than DnA have gone out of their way to use her and she’s not the AoA/Exiles version. I see her making background cameos at best, especially if Magik sticks around.

Nate Grey – 30%. He obviously has some fans and he did carry a book for a few years. But that was a long time ago, it wasn’t a particularly well-regarded book until the end, and he’s felt like an awkward fit in New Mutants and a non-existent fit anywhere else. They already have Hope, Rachel, and Cable around for Summers family drama, plus Scott and Alex. Limbo.

Dani - Limbo, sadly. She's been developed into a pretty capable leader, so I don't see her being regressed into a follower any time soon. Plus, what group will be there to lead.
Nate - Probably some cameos given his name connections but limbo for the most part. Unless they actually start letting him interact with Rachel and Cable.
Doug - Deadness is in his future again and frankly, that's how it should be.
Warlock - Where Doug goes so goes his nation.
Sunspot - Cameo queen of Dazzler levels. AvX is pretty much showing his future for the next few years.
Magma - Same as Sunspot, though her fling with the Devil actually gives her a better shot at a possible storyline.

Dani should move on to be a player in the Thor / Asgardians book.
Doug, Nate, and Warlock can all die as far as I'm concerned.
Sunspot, wallpaper in WaTXM or whatever.
Magma, flying.

Yeah, depending on what happens with Everything Burns, I can see this being where Dani is bound, in-keeping with the more unified universe thinking from Marvel.

Time will tell. As sad as I am about the ending of Journey Into Mystery, I'm even more concerned that they'll revert Lil' Loki to his older self and completely quash any chances of a return.

Since she's currently in Astonishing (and it's not being canceled as far as I'm aware), I don't see any reason why she'd go into limbo.

Probably true, unfortunately. I'm not a big Magma fan, but I did want to see her relationship with Mephisto fleshed out a bit more.

I'm afraid Dani is moving to Agardian book. I'm not sure how I feel about this because it's actually something I've always wanted in some way, but with everything that's happened with the Avengers in these years I hate them so much that I wouldn't touch a Thor-related comic in a million years. Unless she becomes the next focus of JiM and is written by Gillen.
As for the rest, I can see Doug and Warlock biting it in the last issue, Nate going back to Limbo with Bobby and Magma and Blink moving to WAXM.
