That would explain it. I might have been a little bit harsh in my assessment. The stories are okay (they are written by Wolfman, after all) but they don't really feel like Jon Sable stories. I've followed Grell's lead and don't consider them part of Sable continuity.

Shaman's Tears and Bar Sinister were both fun. I wish they'd lasted longer.

Maybe to make the book more marketable to super-hero fans?

Exactly. Good stories, I would have liked to see more, but not on par with the original series.

I found Shamans tears and Bar sinister to be unreadable. Your mileage may differ.

I enjoyed Shaman's Tears when read in one sitting, though I actually wish the Jon Sable crossover hadn't happened. Jon just doesn't feel right in the same universe and Shaman's Tears and Bar Sinister. Bar Sinister itself I've never read.

Finished reading all the issues. They were all a good read even the ones not written by Grell. I see where Grell dropped the Sable series from continuity. Sable's 2nd son was dropped out of continuity (maybe Sable made a deal with the devil) and his relationship with Myke didn't go away. It also looks like both IDW series aren't part of the original continuity since Sonny inspirsed Sable to become a mercenary and in the original continuity, Sonny didn't come into play until after Sable had become a mercenary.

All in all, good issues to read and it looks like there was supposed to be a third IDW series. Hope it eventually gets published, even if only online.

They were "meh" and "yuck" to me, respectively.

I loved the first issues of Jon Sable, though (especially his origin story) as well as the all-Grell Starslayer at Pacific.

I don't think that's right. Sonny was his coach for his Olympic career, wasn't he? That's what I remember... He came back into his life after Sable had become a mercenary, but he was a figure prior to that.

Sonny was his coach for the fencing part of the pentathalon but he didn't become a merc until way after he participated in the olympics. Next time Sable saw him was after he had become a merc. In the IDW series, it was Sonny's idea for Jon to be a merc. I suppose Grell could just have forgotten this since it was two decades between the series.

I love this series when written by Grell. It was one of my favourites from the 80's and I still enjoy rereading the series today. The two recent miniseries from IDW have been excellent.

I've only read one of the non-Grell issues and it didn't really work for me, so I've never tracked down the rest of those issues.

Okay - I just misunderstood what you were saying. That bit may have actually been introduced in the novel... there were a few things like that - pieces which were new/different than how they'd appeared in the comic.

I really enjoyed the original run and all the newer mini-series. Sable is one of my favorites, but then again, I haven't been disappointed with any of Grell's work yet. I really liked the Maggie the Cat mini-series and wish it had continued on. I also loved the Shaman's Tears series and the Bar Sinister mini-series but they had a more sci-fi feel to them than the Sable series, which is why some people may not have liked them as much. Of course, with all the DNA experimenting and cloning and cell manipulation that is currently going on, perhaps Grell will one day be seen as a prophet when we start to see human/animal hybrids walking around.

I liked the novel also, and I heard he was working on a second one.

I only remember the TV show in that Sable had a chubby black blind computer genius named Cheescake.

LOL! Yeah, I watched that show too. It was awful.
