    Default Scarlet Spider 7 *Spoilers*

    spoilers:
    Six months ago.

Roxxon employees drill for oil in Galveston. One of the workers is frightened, says he knew it wasn't oil here. There's lightning or electricity coming out of the pump. The worker asks God to forgive them...

Cut to the present. Kaine's minding his own business, swinging through the city and bitching about the Houston humidity when a missile takes out the top of a skyscraper. Kaine saves a damsel in distress, who express her gratitude with...benefits. Kaine's thinking this is a mistake later, and boy is it, because when he asks what happened at the building, she's like, "It was all a blur after I fired the first rocket."

    Comedy gold!

She thinks he was there for the same reason as her, because of something that happened at Galveston. And her name is Zoe. Some mean looking guys show up and Kaine bails out the window.

Roxxon claims the missile attack in Houston was a gas leak. Kaine does some corporate raider style research into things, which leads him to David Walsh....

And back to Zoe, who is sitting in Walsh's office.

Turns out she's Walsh's daughter, and he says they covered everything up to keep her out of prison.

Walsh warns him to leave before things escalate, which Kaine finds unlikely, until the Rangers show up...

This seemed a bit like filler. Kaine really needs to start being careful who he unmask himself to, how many people have seen his face by now?
Don't know who the Rangers are but the cowboy looks like he staggered off some 80's cartoon.

Sleeper hit of the week I think. I reviewed it at the link in my signature. Very happy with this one.

Kaine does need to be more careful, but that's kind of the point. I'm really enjoying just how awkward this hero thing is for him. I mean, first he jumps out of the way of the falling debris and doesn't consider civilian casualties until the last possible moment. Then he gets thrown off guard by Zoe's affections, but doesn't turn her proposition down. Only to find out she's bat$%^ insane. And then linked to a Roxxon conspiracy that's going to get him a Texas style ass-kicking.

I like this issue, it wasn't the best Scarlet Spider so far but it was good. Although Khoi Pham is no Stegman I thought the art in the issue was still very good. I have no idea who the Rangers are but apparently they are gonna mess Kaine up here soon though.

I wish they'd experiment with not inking Pham's artwork, same way they did with Humberto Ramos' art in Avengers: The Initiative.

The problem with a book this good is that there's almost nothing to say beyond "this is fantastic".

Cause that's what this is. Pleased to see that the new art guy isn't taking the art in a radically new direction. Consistency is nice.

Scarlet Spider continues to be my favourite book right now. Was a bit unsure of Khoi Pham's art from the preview, but I think it could grow on me. I'm guessing the whole unmasking at any given moment will come back to bite him, he's not used to having an identity, let alone a secret one or people to care about.

Will be interested to see if Roxxon play a big part in the series. Christopher Yost showed a good knowledge and use of Marvel's history in the Avengers animated show he wrote, really looking forward to it being used in this book. No idea who the Rangers are, but looking forward to next issue as always.

Ditto. I love it when writers use established but underutilized bits of Marvel lore wonderfully. As for this particular issue, it was pretty good. Yost is really nailing this particular interpretation of Kaine. However, I thought the issue went by quite fast, and beyond good characterization building, we didn't get a whole lot - I mean in terms of action, superbattles, etc. I mean, I'm assuming that next issue will be Kaine v. Rangers for much of the issue, but I really enjoy a single issue that's very balanced, and this didn't strike me as overly balanced. Even still, I'm enjoying the series and can't wait to see where Yost takes us. Lots of interesting plot lines dangling.

-Pav, who once again is asking for a Morbius and Kaine team-up, Mr. Yost ! It's so perfect! Maybe I should write my second letter to Marvel ever...

I'm I the only one that feels awkward about hearing this good advice for Kaine to be more careful with his ID.

I am reading a book that had the tag line "all of the power none of the responsibility". Does anyone actually want Kaine to be responsible before the story dictates it?

Man, does nobody know who the Rangers are? Let me explain.

In Incredible Hulk #265, Rick Jones, who had been captured by the Corrupter, sent out a distress call to the Avengers. He was in the American Southwest, so it never got to them, but it did get to:

Texas Twister, whirlwind-generating ranchhand! Firebird, super-religious pyrokinetic! Shooting Star, sharp-shooting rodeo star! Red Wolf, inheritor of a millennia-old Native American heroic tradition! And Phantom Rider, inheritor of a century-old heroic tradition that kind of sucked because he was possessed by cowboy ghosts! Together, they became...the Rangers!

On that last page, we only see Twister, Firebird, Living Lightning (who joined the Rangers years later when they joined the Initiative), and the alien-looking guy who seems to be a new character. Shooting Star and Red Wolf were members the last time we saw the team, so they might show up too, but don't hold your breath for the Rider, who was shot dead by Crossfire while trying to save his daughter from the Rider's curse.

"This may have been a mistake." is probably my favorite moment of the series so far.
