Fan Killed Waiting in Line for Comic-Con

Last time I went to San Diego, it was a rare time I attended a con, rather than worked it. It was when the second movie of the four came out, and there were Twilight campers back then. We were there at preview night, and heard they'd been camped for days. And that some of the folks in line actually had made efforts to sucker each other into getting out of line, to get a better seat. It was cutthroat, supposedly.

Just... having volunteered to work line control or security at a lot of my local cons, this is the kind of nightmare scenario you want to avoid. You want everyone to get to come to their respective geekdom, worship at the altar of whatever fandom they are a part of and get the same enjoyment as everyone else. Someone desperate to not lose their place in line to an extent that they jump into traffic to get to where they think the line will end up...

I mean, you can't put that on the San Diego convention line control or staff, really. They haven't opened. This isn't something that's getting monitored, so much, right? And you can't expect a convention to do line control days in advance of even their preview night...

If they are going to sell out of next years tickets the day they go on sale, at something like $500 a pop, it's time for a bigger venue. Not blaming Comicon for the girl bolting into traffic, but when people are lined up days in advance to attend a panel, the room has to be bigger. I imagine many of those people waiting in line days in advance bought their tickets strictly for that panel and if they can't attend it will be thousands wasted and their annual vacation blown on standing in line for nothing. I can understand how it means so much to them even if I don't share the enthusiasm. Ticket purchasers have to be able to attend the panels they paid to see. Vegas could handle this crowd with room to spare.

That's just a wee bit weird and crazy.

Is it any crazier than people waiting a week or more when the newest Star Wars flick comes out?

I don't think she was as worried about getting IN to the panel, as that she wanted to be right up in the FRONT.
