    Default The Fortress of Solitude

Who else thinks the name, "Fortress of Solitude" sounds a little depressing? Or a lot depressing? I know it's designed as a place for Supes to retreat to so he can be alone with his human/Kryptonian thoughts, but really man, when I hear the words "Fortress of Solitude" what I'm really hearing is "Fortress of Bummer-tude".

It's also not helping matters that's in the freezing arctic and the cold kinda sucks.

I don't know...considering what a ray of sunshine Superman it seems out of character that his crash pad would have such a dour name. Perhaps he should change it to something more fitting like, "Fortress of Kickassitude".

The Fortress of Solitude has always struck me as being a bit emo.

People suck. One needs to get away from it all now and then. No humans (except Lois) allowed.

Namor is King! Killraven too. Mantis is the greatest!

Shatterstar is gay. Deadpool is Bi.

It's a fantastic name. It's poetic and self explanatory. It is anti emo if anything

I think it can be construed that way, but it need not be. I don't think there is anything necessarily emo about having a place to be alone with your thoughts, to ponder the great workings of the universe, to feel closer to your birth culture, etc.

I really loved the evolution of it into the "Fortress of Solidarity" in "Grounded", though.

I've thought about potential fun plays on it, as well; Soliloquy of Solitude, Fortress of Sol (in the sun), etc

and I may be mis-remembering, but was the satellite a tesserect? I thought they were talking about the Legion's Time Sphere (which is definitely a tesserect).

He calls it his "First Fortress" in Action 6, and Lois makes a pretty big allusion to the "Solitude" part in issue 8 with the "a place to be alone" question.
I think "Fortress of Solitude" is actually a pretty cool name. I think it just fits the place, y'know, this huge palace hidden in the middle of nowhere turned more or less willingly (it pretty much started as a place for Superman to put the stuff he brings back from his adventures) into a tribute to his life, with his childhood, the weapons of his deadliest ennemies..... It sounds majestic to me, not emo.

Yeah, there's an aspect of 'Ultimate Man Cave' to it (more so than even The Bat's).

Well, the name might be a bit emo, but I'm sure the place is still covered in crumbs, empties and takeout containers, making it a proper man-cave. I bet he sets up sports matches between villains in the Phantom Zone and hangs out on the Super-Couch.

I like that it sounds lonely and isolated. I think that's kind of the point, besides it being the ultimate hangout and headquarters for Superman.
