Default So, something reasonably big coming out of Vertigo's SDCC panel?

    http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dc-c...interview.html

Nrama: Are there any plans for an event related to the Vertigo line? It seems like that line is being left out of the excitement with all this New 52 stuff.

Wayne: You should definitely check out our Vertigo panel in San Diego next week. My colleague, Mr. Cunningham, is going to moderate, but I'll be in the back.

Nrama: So for those of our readers who aren't going to San Diego, are you saying there's an announcement about an event coming during the Vertigo panel? And I did say "event," which you didn't correct, so you're going along with that word?

Wayne: We're not going to tell you any more than that.

Cunningham: It's Thursday at 5:45 Pacific daylight time. That would be a good time to monitor our website as well, because I bet that announcements of certain magnitude will be done pretty much at the same time. [Newsarama Note: You can just stay tuned right here to Newsarama for that news, don't worry!] So that's a good time to monitor the information coming out of the convention on Thursday.

Nrama: Interesting. So can those who are attending the panel expect to see a well-known writer?

Wayne: Oh, I think we're out of time!

    Speculation?

If this is sort of a 'relaunch', and I use that term loosely, but lets say it's a few launches and maybe a creative team switch up on Hellblazer...

Morrison and Stewart's Final Seaguy mini?

A Sandman story written by Gaiman?

    Ellis or Ennis on something?

Stephen King writing something a bit more substantial for Vertigo (than American Vampire)?

Milligan doing an Enigma sequel, which he's talked about from time to time?

The only thing I can think of would be a major creator. He said "event", which I find weird. The idea of a Vertigo event probably means a major writer, or team, coming back to Vertigo. Then again, it might be Swamp Thing related. I know he's part of the new 52, but you never know.

I find it hard to believe that it would be Ellis or Gaiman anything. I have been wrong before though.

I agree that, just going by their schedules and interests, its hard to believe. But Gaiman DID want to do a Sandman thing, for the anniversary, where Vertigo wouldn't agree to his page rate. And Ellis might have a bit of time between novels to finish up his long promised Desolation Jones.

Something significant from Mieville might be it as well.

Who knows. I think Vertigo really needs something to get the juice flowing again, because Image's output in the future is more exciting.

I forgot about Desolation Jones! That would be pretty awesome! I hadn't heard about Gaiman's interest in new Sandman. Where did you hear/read that?

I agree, though. Vertigo needs something. These new books aren't doing it for me, though I will admit I haven't given them much of a chance. They could end up being totally fantastic. They just haven't grabbed me yet.

It was years ago, for Sandman's something-anniversary. He was all set to do it but contracts to his liking couldn't be negeotiated (re: page rate). But he later went on to do "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader" so it must have been an issue with Vertigo. Presumably they (DC Entertainment) are trying to reinvest in the Vertigo side of thigns a little now, shore it up the way they did DC proper?

Wayne and Cunningham never called it an "event", they just failed to correct the newsarama interviewer. It is interesting that Wayne mentioned an unannounced project as being one of DC's sales drivers. Presumably, this is the Vertigo announcement they hype later, but I guess it doesn't have to be. New work from Neil Gaiman would be just about the only thing that would fit into that category. Another volume of Seaguy or Desolation Jones would be awesome, but neither really sold much in the direct market. So you have to figure more Sandman but its also possible that he's writing an American Gods book as a comic to go along with the HBO series that's being developed.

I'm gonna guess that we have 2 new series + Collider. Would be awesome if we could get something from Morrison.

Gaiman requested a comparable pay rate to what he'd get for preparing a novel, which for him is about the same amount of work, but Vertigo couldn't meet his demands. There were no hurt feeling or strained relationships-- it was just something where it didn't work out. Neil's still a big champion of comics and Vertigo in particular.

I suspect if he's doing it, he's only doing covers. Would he really leave a book he has total creative control over (Batwoman) so soon? Even if he were to stay on as writer, the chief draw for the book is his artwork; he'd be shooting himself in the foot.

Well, you wouldn't get much bigger than that, if it's true. Also, if it is true, I think my head just might explode from too much awesomeness.

Well, no, not really. Doing Batwoman is fine and dandy but it doesn't come close to doing a new Sandman project with Neil Gaiman.
