This is my first review of a Ultimate Spidey book and I'm glad that it is this issue. Before I go any farther lets get some spoilers going!
end of spoilers
-We start with Miles blowing off meeting Uncle Aaron on roof top, Aaron is clearly pissed and flies off with a set of Vulture Wings totally BA!
-We then move to Miles struggling with deciding if he should tell his parents about his secret, him and Ganke are talking about it while a goofing looking girl listens in. We aren't yet introduced to the girl but it seems she will play a role in the future.
-Miles decides to tell his mom and dad so he heads over to their house, Uncle Aaron is waiting for him. There are some menacing threats from Aaron and Miles appears to give in and agrees to meet Aaron later to "team up"
-Miles goes into his parents house but we don't get any idea if he told his mom and dad, I was under the impression he did not tell them
-Miles meets with Aaron on a roof top, he tells Aaron to leave the city and never come back. Aaron doesn't take this well and an epic battle follows.
-Eventually the two fall off the roof and fight on the streets, Aaron has some Shocker like tech and is blasting away with little regard for human life. Miles is saving a bus full of people that are caught in the cross fire and he realizes that he is destined to use his power to help people.
-The citizens all cheer for Spiderman and some even say they are glad he's not really dead (foreshadowing much??)
-Aaron tries to blast Miles again but his tech malfunctions and he is caught in the middle of a huge explosion.
-We may see Aaron dying from the blast but he may still be alive, tune in to next issue. Miles looks horrified that his uncle may be dying. As he slips into unconsciousness he tell Miles "You are just like me"
Wow, this issue was fantastic. Bendis has finally gotten to the meat of any Spiderman story and that is when the young boy realizes he is destined for greatness and he is now obligated to help those that cannot help themselves.
For one of the first times since I've read a Miles-centric book I did not think Miles was being a whiny little baby. He finally did some growing up in this issue and it was handled beautifully. Bendis has been building this up for 11 issues now and we finally receive some pay off, all the indecisiveness is gone and Miles makes a choice, he won't be anybody's pawn. I think this series has struggled from it's inception based on what came before it but Bendis has made me see Miles as a legitimate hero for the first time. As much as I dislike Bendis's most recent stuff he has shown that he is still an amazing writer with this issue.
Moving on to the story. I think we may have gotten to a huge turning point in Miles life, at least thats the way I felt. With out getting to spoilery Aaron's future will greatly affect Miles story and I can't wait to get the next issue to see which road Bendis is going to go down. There was so much emotion in this story it felt like it was leaping from the pages.
Speaking of leaping from the pages Marquez is absolutely killing it on this book. He is probably my favorite artist since Immomen, and yes I am including Pichelli in that line up too. I hope that Marvel keeps him locked up for a long time.
Overall I would say this is a must have issue for UCSM staring Miles Morales. If you haven't been able to get into Miles yet this may be your jumping on point, it certainly was for me!
