Or did they just come up with something that arbitrarily sounded scientific....
(Which I realize is almost impossible to form since Krypton is a noble gas).

I thought it was supposed to be KrC2. (Again unlikely).
There ain't no teens watching Teen Titans Go.
Maybe due to science! chemistry is different on Krypton, so Krypton can form compounds that are sufficiently strong that when it falls to earth, earth science can't reassert itself. Maybe its an element with an atomic number of 300 or so. Maybe it doesn't really make sense and it doesn't really matter.
I would like to say for the record that this is the FIRST TIME I've withheld dong when someone was so desperately asking for some.

Kryptonite probably has nothing to do with the element Krypton since it releases some kind of magic radiation.
I'm pretty sure the radiation is intended to be science fiction.
Well, it's a completely different type of radiation than what we know of.
I would assume that it's some kind of exotic particle that we haven't discovered yet.
Kryptonite is the result of the intense pressures that built up inside of the planet's core and depending on which origin you go with, a super weapon that was going to blow up the planet long before Jor-El's birth. Kryptonite in the DCU has never been given a designation on the periodic table. Krypton the gas is just that. It does nothing to a Kryptonian.
