    Default Action Comics 11 discussion

    Spoilers ahead, as always.

I thought this was a pretty good issue, if not as good as last months. I was expecting something more from Supes secret identity than Johnny Clark, though it did make sense why he would choose a fireman as his secret identity, allowing him to be Superman all the time.

We got our first look at Susie this issue and how she ties in with the first Superman (who with his cometeer ship is almost certainly captain comet). I got to be honest, I groaned a little when he told Susie they were "nutents", along with the with the high sci-fi talk Adam dropped on everyone.

The whole magnitude thing seems to be coming back into play and I'm interested to see what it is. I also noticed quite a few call backs to All star in this issue which was cool to see.

The fill in art was pretty jarring. I like Rags art but he really needs to keep up.

The back up was nothing special.

When you say magnitude, did you mean The Multitude?

No, I was right the first time. It's the comic that got it wrong!

Between "I wonder what it would sound like backwards" and the "Puck in Manhattan" poster in the background of one of those scenes, they're telegraphing it heavily to be Mr. Mxy. I really like the idea that he's so big an idea that his name is 'every word at once'. What would a fifth dimensional being entering 3 dimensional space look like? It might look like an infinite, numberless points of intrusion, a leviathan with more hands than dust motes in the universe, more heads than planets.

The number of planets targeted for destruction is also 333, which is half the anti christ (more mischievous than evil), and traditionally represents change, transition, and travel.

I don't like how Grant is kind of ignoring the other books. This, Superman and Supergirl seem to have different origins and stuff. Even the Superman in Justice League is different.

That's fantastic, I can't believe I glanced over it. And the kind of maddeningly large quantities, concepts and numbers and ideas that arguably make up a 5D Imp like Mxy could certainly be referred to as "A Multitude". After all, we know from our history with Superman that he finds a way to turn away Mxy, which indeed "should be impossible", so it'd be quite nice to see Jor-El do it, too.

Similar to this, but flipped ... I don't like how the other books or the rest of the New 52 are kind of ignorant of Grant. But I don't need them. I've got my insane sci-fi right here where I want it.

The one fill-in artist (same guy who did the end of issue # 8, right?) is someone I'd rather have than Morales. Even his page layouts feel more stylish. I'll have to re-read it and pick up on things more closely. This was the first issue where I really felt the back-up a little bland. Oh they're all non-essential (but "fun" and of a pretty decent quality), but this one more than usual. Still it is a funny concept, and paints a nice picture of a city, as I can't imagine this wouldn't be just the case in a real metropolitan city with a street level guy like Superman.

And I loved that this issue really hammered out some of the awkward day-to-day aspects of his insane life. He moved from a loft to a house in space! The Brainiac AI is not strictly the Collector AI! Susie is a weird starchild! Captain Comet is an ubermensch! It's like building the standard set of Superman World Tropes using bits, pieces and parts from high-brow philosophical sci-fi like Star Trek and Doctor Who. Very appealing.

Considering that Grant is the main writer of Superman at the moment, it's everyone else that should stop ignoring what he is doing in Action Comics.

As for issue, not as great as the last one, but still very good. Some really interesting things happened in it, and shocking really. Because when was the last time that Superman didn't save Lois? I think in Rucka's run, but then it was a part of the plan to attack Clark emotionally if I remember right. Interesting enough this run was also the last time that Mxy had a prominent role in Superman's books (unless I'm confusing writers).

I wonder what will happen to Susie since there is no way that Superman will let a small girl to be taken from her family. But at the same time a kid with powers can't be left unchecked.

EDIT: We also have an answer to the question if Superman can fly at the moment and like some hoped he is still in a sort of jumping stage.

I will say I'm not loving the backups, and I think they should have gone with their initial choice -- Fialkov.

Morrison liked Sholly Fisch's work and wanted him to write the backups.

    I know.

I'm saying that was a mistake.

It was pretty enjoyable, I wish Morrison would have explained more about the first Superman but it was still good.

The back up story was entertaining too although a bit simplistic.
Comic Books are fun, Comic Book fans not so much.

    Okay.

For me the mistake is making CAFU do the backups and not the main story.

He does great, Cassady like work, but he's no more capable of a monthly than Rags, I'm afraid.

Or do you mean doing the Brad Walker sections?

Hmm... I was thinking the opposite..Everything seems to line-up to me... I haven't read Supergirl... But in JL that made a point that Superman have personal relationship outside the league and here's the beginnings of that...
All stories are imaginary, so you get to decide what's important and what isn't. Continuity is fluid.
